My local small town FFL has a Marlin 1894S in 41 mag and I don't have anything else in that cambering, as my other levers are 44 mag and 357 mag (Browning 92's). I was thinking about picking it up, I looked at it and it looks like it about 99%+ in finish with no wood dings, metal scratches and no wear on any of the moving parts ( lever, hammer spur, bolt). JM stamp on barrel. It comes with a box of ammo and the original manual.

Questions are these?

1. What would be a fair offer for it?

2. Any issues or downsides to this chambering or rifle I should know about?

All JM stamped Marlin Lever Action Rifles are bringing crazy $$$ on GunBroker nowadays.

And 41 magnum versions bring even more.

So you can pretty much forget about “fair offers” if the Dealer keeps up on current pricing.

My advice, if it’s a decent price at all buy it.
They’re fairly rare in 41 mag, and there will not be any more produced.
And now that Ruger bought out Marlin, their 1894 Model LA production is extremely slow.
If they ever get around to producing a .41 mag version, it’ll be YEARS down the road. And they won’t be cheap either.

There are no “downsides” to the rifle and caliber.
Mine was very accurate and super reliable.

Only concern may be finding Factory Ammo at this time if you don’t reload.

Biggest question is : What’s the Dealer’s asking price ???

If it’s under $1500 it’s a great buy, between $1500-2000 is about where they’ve been lately but I’ve seen them over $2000 often. Like others have said a rare chambering and a cult following……..won’t run across many more especially if the price is “right”!!

Earlier this year I picked up a 1894SS in 44 mag. I gave $1600. The blued 41 mag guns rune a bit more than that.
Unless you are set on a 41 mag, a 44 mag is cheaper both in gun and components. Plus a bit heavier ballisticly.

A bit different model then the one you're looking at I suppose but I bought a 1894FG in .41 magnum years ago when Marlin made them for a short time.

The .41 out of a carbine is an excellent low recoil deer and hog round at shorter ranges, Perfect in thickets or dense timber. If you can get it for a decent price it'd be worth having imo.

The price did seem very low to me, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't walking into or buying a mess since I have no experience with that cartridge. I do love the pistol cartridges in a carbine.

Good to know, if I dont want to hold onto it, there are those here who would be so good to take it off my hands!

I haven't seen a deal like that for a long, long time. Hope you enjoy it. I've killed a couple of coyotes and a two point Mule deer with mine. It is a stomper! Great to carry around out in the field, too.

EDIT: If you reload, I've found that loading a 210 grains semi-wadcutter bullet in front of 8.5 grs. of Unique powder is very accurate in my Marlin, mfg. 1987, easy on the shoulder after multiple target shooting, and that loading hits hard, too. Just a suggestion.

Yes, I picked it up, Ill post pictures tomorrow, not that its any different than any other 1894. The wood is nice, not plain/not exceptional, but nice. Its exactly as he described and the metal and wood are perfect, looks like it was shot very little with no real wear or bluing rubbing off anywhere. Hoping to take it out Christmas eve.

I do hand load also, almost all my dies are mostly Redding or Dillon carbide for pistol. I need to pick up a set of dies and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? I only have one set of LEE dies I use for my 480 Ruger because it was all I could find and they have been decent. Otherwise, I will likely buy a set of Redding dies.

He is a gentleman in his late 80's and nearing the end of his FFL days. He told me he was gonna renew next year one more time but he's trying to get rid of a lot of his stuff. Some of the stuff I thought was overpriced also though. I was really surprised at this one. Thats why I asked first, I thought maybe they were lemons or something.

That's a handsome rifle. Glad you picked it up.

As for reloading dies, I used RCBS with the RCBS Carbide Sizing Die. Never any problems. My press was the Dillion 450, or if I just wanted to load a few "experimental" rounds, I'd use my RCBS Rockchucker.

I think I am going to sell my ruger 45LC/45acp Redhawk since its now the only 45 LC I own and never shoot it, and buy either a ruger in 41 mag or a S&W. I like the 6 inch barrel, so it will most likely be a S&W.

This may very well be THE BUY OF THE YEAR. If you do play the lottery or scratch off then I recommend picking up one or both as this might be your lucky week.

Yep, gotta have a .41 Mag. combo. I had a S&W 57, 6" bbl., nickel. That and the rifle were mighty comforting to have around up in the mountains of Idaho and Wyoming. Both were great shooters.

The .41 mag and 32 H&R mag are a my two favorite “pistol” cartridges - especially in the 1894s. Like I said before I think you’ll like your new acquisition!
