Okay, I found a 1955'ish win 30-30. It has been a hunting rifle, but the wood is clean clean without dings and the metal is 80% probably. They are asking 800$. Nice rifle overall. Regular buck horn sights.

Is this an average price? Could I hold out and do better? I am thinking maybe. What are the pitfalls to these rifles that I should look for...ie action wear, rifleing?

I think $800 is high but that's just me, somebody else might think not. Back before last years skyrocketing Winchester price increases those would go for maybe $500 +/-.

In the upper midwest a M94 in 90% cond. will usually go for about
$500 +/-. That would be a .30-30 late '40's to '63. A .32 Spl.
might be $100 more. Hope that helps.

Here they still are in the range of $450-550 for a 90%+ gun DOP from 1950-1963.

You fail to say where "here" is. Your information has little meaning without the "here".

"Here" is in MI although I think that's fairly moot as prices are pretty stable considering you can check gun broker, Guns America or several other on line venues to get a feel for price. Cabelas is pretty much getting top dollar and they had one on their site recently made in the early 50's at 99% for $800. Here is one for just a bit more that is in very high condition with a more desireable DOP. I'm pretty sure Cabelas won't charge more no matter which state your in.

I find that Cabela's prices for used fireams in their gun libraries are at least 10-25% higher than I can buy the same firearm for at a large gun shop that maintains a large inventory and has a lot of turnover in their used firearms. Gun show prices around here mirror Cabela's, but the biggest town within a 150-mile radius is about 12,000 people, so our gun shows don't have a lot to look at compared to say Albuquerque or Tucson.

I would hesitate to pay $800 for the rifle as you described it, unless it was an item that I really wanted and I had no luck in finding a better deal in a couple of years of looking. If I ever find a Model 94 in .38-55 in that condition, I will probably fall all over myself if the price is less than $1,000...

mudhen: Good Luck on the "under $1,000" part---I just sold a Model 94 .38-55, made in 1905 in original, 75-80% condition, still perfectly functional, for $1,275 at the Indianapolis gun show....and if I'd held out, could probably have gotten $50-$75 more...

I have always wanted a 1894 SRC in 38-55. I'd expect the price to be mighty steep today.

I had a 1950's 94 30-30 rebored to 38-55 and am VERY pleased with it. It may not be origonal, but WAY cheaper!

I have a late 50'S 94 IN .30-30 that is at least 95% condition. I never gave much thought about it. It has that nice reddish tint to the stock. I picked it up at a pawn shop with thoughts of shooting a deer with it. I even bought a box of shells, and just put the gun up. I recently considered selling it, but have no idea what they are now worth. When did the prices go up for the pre-64 .30-30's? I always thought that they were the forgotten guns when it came to pre-64 Wins. Should I sell or hold on to it........hmmmmm.

I'm thinking the price on pre-64 94's has about "peaked" but one never knows for sure. You won't be able to send your grandkids to collage from the profits of this rifle, but it is sure worth a few bucks. I've got $500. in a 1957 94 in 90% condition, and wouldn't sell it for that.
One thing about pre-64's, that ain't making any more of 'em!

vb, thanks for the reply. Yep, not looking to get rich, just time to move some stuff out I guess. About the only reason I bought it when I did is because it is so darned pretty. It was the nicest one I have seen for sale without one coming out of a "collection". Then again, back when I got it, they were easy to find, but not necessarily in that condition. I may dig her out and post a picture.

Wish I had some extre cash, I'd make you an offer! I've always been a "gun loonie" but now it seems I'm a Winchester "collector" also. (grin!) Love them old pre-64's!

That's a reasonable price for a nice condition '41 vintage carbine. You just have not found the right buyer yet.

I got one at a pawn shop last year and had to pay $100.00 for it. It's a 57 model, in great mechanical condition. The stock is dark from use and some slight freckling on the barrel and receiver. The only things wrong with it are the addition of a recoil pad and it's missing the front site.
