I just purchased a 300 Savage on line. It came with three boxes of Remington CL 150. Three shot group out of the box 1.3” at 100 yards with the factory loads. I was happy with that. Next I tried 39 grains H4895 with 150 grain Hornady SP. 1.7” 5 shot group at 100 yards.
Happy with that too. But I am out of Hornady 150 SP bullets. I have several boxes of Hornady BT bullets but so far ~ 4” groups. I’m not satisfied with that.
Do you have favorite loads for you 300 Savage 99? I’d appreciate hearing what you shoot.
Savage 300`s shoot well ,keep a eye out at ma-pop stores and maybe some other stores too ,sometimes 300 Savage shells sell cheap.
I shoot 130 grain Barnes bullets. Also have a few 125 grain Nosler Ballistic tip loads.
I like the 160 grain FTX Hornady bullet. The 308 marlin express bullet. The cannelure fits perfectly to savage 300 brass.
How does the crown of your 300 savage look?
Some of mine like the heavier bullets for the lighter or medium loads I shoot for paper (or even deer). Might give some 165gr or 180gr bullets a try. I shoot a lot of Nosler Partition 2nds with IMR4895.
With 150 grain bullets, try 42 grains of WW-748, or 40 grains of IMR 4895, or 40 grains of IMR 4064. With 180s, I use 41 grains of WW-748. I have three 99s in 300 Savage chambering. I shoot the same loads in all three. Try flat base bullets instead of boat tails.
Thanks. The crown looks ok, I think. I’ve ordered IMR-4895. I’ve always liked H4885 better, but I’ve seen that IMR 4895 is the favorite in the Nosler manual and in Ken Waters Pet loads. I used to shoot WW748 a lot in several cartridges mainly silhouette shooting. I pretty much knew what the temperatures were going to be. Lately I’ve been trying to switch to powders that are not as temperature sensitive since deer hunting (or elk and antelope) temperatures can be warm or pretty cold in SD. Maybe I’m overly concerned as when it’s much below zero degrees I’m not as likely to be sitting on a hillside or even pushing a draw anymore.

For the 300 Savage I like the Sierra 150s or the Hornady 150 SST designed for the 300 Savage. I use these with 40.0 - 41.5 gr. of IMR4320 in several rifles. Some show a strong preference for some particular combination from this, and some don't.
I use 40.5 grains of 4320 under the 150 Hornady SST designed for the .300 Savage. The standard 150 Horn IL does fine as well.
I loaded the Barnes 130’s. They shoot well. You might try them.
My 99 shoots 39.5 of 4064 into about 1.3" at 100 with 150 grain Remington Core-Lokts. I have loaded the same charge with Nosler Ballistic Tip Hunting bullets and also with 150 grain Hornady Spire points.
The Hornadys and the Noslers look a bit prettier but the old Remington Core Lokts shoot the tightest in my rifle so far. I tried a few 180 grain loads too, but the 150s are about 2X more accurate. I had 21 of the old Sierra 150 grain RN bullets in an old mostly used-up box, and those were the most accurate bullet I have shot in my 99 to date, shooting under 1 MOA.
I also used some Hornady Flex Tip expanding solids and they did well grouping into about 1.5 MOA. I killed an antelope with one about 5 weeks ago. But I can't say any of the other bullets I have tried so far are as accurate as the old Core-Lokt in my 99 except for the Sierra Round Nose. . And having used Remington C-Ls in the past in 300 Savage, 308s and 30-06s I know they are fine for deer and gave me good diameter wound channels and also full penetration. They are not "super modern" but neither is the 300 Savage.
When I was a young boy in the early to mid 60s my dad had a 99 in 300 and it was the rifle I started hunting deer with. I guess I have come back to the place I started.
Now I own 2 of them, a Savage 99 and the Remington 81 I just killed my 2 white tails with last Monday.
I have used 150 gr Partitions over Varget or TAC with great success, about 1 gr below max, to take a moose and 3 whitetail bucks. Recently acquired another 300 Savage, built in the early 50's, that is very accurate with this load.
I use Mule Deer's load of 42 gr RE15 with 165 Partitions in my 99 EG 300 Sav. It's a 1 MOA or better load in my rifle.
150's are your moneymaker. My .300's have always shot 150 sierra's into .5 to .75 groups. I can go find the load if you get stuck -pretty sure it was H4895.
My .300 is not picky. It likes anything in 150 gr. I use IMR3031, 37 gr with Nostler 150gr Ballestic Tip is my favorite. My favorite new toy is a Savage .22 High Power. Just ordered some 60 gr. cast bullets from Bull Shop. Can
't wait to try them. Can't find factory ammo.

Accuracy loads from Ken Waters: With 150 grain bullets, 40 grains of either IMR 4064 or IMR 4895. Also with 150s - 42 grains of WW-748. With 180 grain bullets, either 41 grains of WW 748 or 44 grains of WW 760. I have used all of these loads. They work as advertised.
