Not crazy about the buckhorns the Winchester 1886 came with. Any suggestions? I love peeps!

Lyman No. 2
Everything in this thread would still apply as far as sights are concerned - BUT - how is the 1886 drilled? Does it have two holes on the upper left side of the receiver? One assumes it is top eject as opposed to the angle eject of later Model 94's, so without being d & t on the side the options are limited. Skinner does make an aperture sight for the 1886 but it requires two 6x48 holes be drilled and tapped into the top rear of the receiver.

Yes it does

It is basically like this one here

If it's drilled like this then you have a bunch of choices - Williams, Lyman or older Redfield. The older all steel Redfields or steel Lymans are preferable IMO for a nice rifle like that but a aluminum Williams FP or Foolproof would work just as well. That tang safety unfortunately negates the opportunity for any number of excellent tang sights.

I stand corrected. wink Pretty neat.

Although my Winchester 1885 Traditional Hunter came with a Marbles tang sight, which unfortunately wiggled forward and back in the upright position. Not much, but I learned right off if you didn't make sure it was in the same position each time it would tend to string shots vertically. Not saying that to denigrate the brand but that one looks exactly like the one I had except for the different base so just offering this as something to watch for if you go the tang sight route.
