I am looking for warm beanies, really warm. I’d use them for everyday use and hunting. What are some of your favorites?
Thanks.

As far as beanies go, I like OR's Flurry. I don't like beanies that are tight cut, and these are generously sized so that @ L/XL I can layer a thin helmet liner under it if needed.

However, I don't think there probably exists a beanie much warmer than Kuiu's Kenai Beanie. I say that having a Kenai Bomber hat.

I need a beanie that can fit over a cap. Since my cataract surgery, I need a cap with a bill to reduce glare to my eyes. Most stocking caps won't come down far enough over my ears if worn over a cap. Who makes one that comes down farther on the sides than on the front and back?

My son gave me a Sitka Dakota Beanie for Christmas a couple years ago.
Like all Sitka stuff it's expensive but damn if it isn't the best beanie I've ever had. Waterproof, windproof and very warm.

My favorite is a no name brand bought at a ski shop 20 years ago. It's more like a helmet liner, but it's a windproof fleece. Way, way warmer than the lack of bulk would make you think.

Absolutely no question for me, based on Utah winter experience: Heat Holders. Caps, hats, beanies, socks, gloves...they're all super warm and durable.

Look for one made from Alpaca fur they are warmer than wool. The Peruvian chulu style with ear flaps are practical. More conventional knitted ones are available on line. I have a beanie and an alpaca balaclava and it has to be single digit temperatures to need both at once.

I was hoping you would reply Brad grin . I have a Kuiu Kenai Beanie, it’s very warm and it’s my primary. I’d probably like the bomber hat as well whereas I’d have more coverage on the face and ears. I just wanted some more options. The Kuiu is warm and anything short of really needing it, you’ll be finding yourself taking it off. I’ll have to buy a few brands and play with them this winter. Thanks.

Yup. Looks goody, but I've been known to wear a beanie over a ball cap when really cold. Always Carhartt.

Rock Chuck....Not a beanie, but take a look at Outdoor Research’s Whitefish Hat....may work well for you. I too like a bill on my winter hats for sun management.

Can’t wear them. Every one I’ve owned has made my head itch, and finding one that fits my big head is a challenge. Plus, since I hunt mostly woods, keeping one on my head while working through brush is almost impossible. So it’s Stormy Kromers when it’s chilly, no-name ball-caps when it’s mild, and hoods over either when it's bitter cold.

thanks for the link. However, for real cold I wear a Kromer. I need a beanie for hunting in Oct when it warms up in the daytime and I put it in my pack.

Simms made a very warm one

The Columbia with the reflective stiff inside is really warm
And if need be, it’s thin enough that you can wear a regular beanie on top for even more warmth.

Wore mine up Kilimanjaro in the freezing butt cold, and it worked well.

Love my Stormy Kromers, I have a heavy duty one and a lighter one. Great at keeping my head warm.

Carhartt. I prefer the kind with ear covers and a built in face mask.

That one's almost funny. They make it in orange so you be seen with a camo mask so you can stay hidden.

Ya mine is blaze orange with a black face mask. Not like I care what color it is....my down mittens are a god awful teal blue but they're warm.

+ 1 on the itch.

I don't have a big head, but it must be kinda cone shaped.
Any beanie I ever wore kept climbing up my head and off.

I used to see them for sale with a ball cap brim. Laughed at them.
Now with older eyes, one would be nice. Haven't seen one I years.

Go to Amazon and search for 'beanie visor'. You'll find lots of them. Carhartt has several versions.

LOL! I have the same problem with beanies. They ride up until they're perched on top of my head. No such problems with watch caps, so I have settled on an orange Carhartt watch cap over a baseball cap (need that brim for sun glare).
Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: Warm beanie. - 11/11/20
My head is wide on top. Most ball caps just perch on top. I need one that will come down to my ears to stay on. The best fit I've found is with some Sportsmans Warehouse store brands and some Carhardtts.

I got a Mellon head.

Hard to find a OSFM beanie that fits me.

Warm lids are relatively light and affordable. A brim is mandatory. I usually leave the truck w/ at least a balaclava and a couple of hats. If I had to carry only one it would be an OR Whitefish. Now I have to check out those Kuiu lids. For winter in the mountains a fur lined bomber and a balaclava over a synthetic no-button top ball cap is a decent system. A hooded soft shell midlayer and a hooded down jacket complete the system for climbing through glassing or calling. Your melon is the easiest and most efficient temp control point for a long strenuous day in the mountains.

And keep a spare watchcap (or beanie) in a ziplock bag in your pack for warm, dry sleeping.

I was going to ask clarifying questions, but they are on sale so I just bought both. smile

Thanks for the recommendation.

Back when I was working outdoors for the local electric company we had insulated hard hat liners that worked really well keeping my bald head warm. I have used them under many hats to hunt with. Especially the beanies and Jones style ( required ) orange hats. The Jones style is good for rainy days I found by experience.

All these hunters putting plastic bags on their head. How hard is it to skin a couple rabbits or a fox?

Also search for “jeep hats” or “jeep caps” on Amazon and ebay.

The problem most are made in Asia and apparently the Asians have little heads. Some fit, some don’t. Tight fitting ones make my head itch.
Get the wool ones, they’re warmer and seem to fit a bit better.
Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: Warm beanie. - 11/13/20
Most of the jeep caps, made more or less like the old WWII wool army caps, are called '1 size fits most'. I wear a 7 1/2 to 7 5/8 and I haven't found any of them that will fit me. I have to try on a hat before I buy it.
