Under what conditions do you use a Bivy?

Me, I have an Equinox, cheap 6oz. that I use with a 6x8' Equinox tarp.

They are nice in steep rocky places, but I don't love mine.

I use my MLD 6oz bivy for all of my backpacking hunts. I usually pair it with a tarp which I only set up if I expect rain or snow as I prefer to lay under the stars. I use it in my hot tent as well, especially in spring to avoid ticks.

I have a lightweight MLD bag/blanket I use in my Biv, great combination.

I've seen some of the bigger biv's that can be staked down, I think I'd like that when turning over at night. Keep the biv in place rather than flip over and such.

I have 2 of the mil issued goretex. I use a floorless SEEK tent and have used the bivy in Colorado high country and Alaska. It’s worth the weight.

Cold, but dry scenarios. Tarp overhead if it rains.

Liking the one man ICS and clones over a bivi. Slightly better ventilation as well as protected storage.
I have and love the Borah Snowyside eVent bivy. I use it any time I’m not using a floored shelter (almost always).

Looked at the ICS, kinda heavy.

I got rid of my lightweight bivies as I've moved away from tarps (dcf tents are now as light as tarps), but I still have my MLD eVent bivy. I'll use it sometimes on hunts if the weather is very favorable and I use it the winter with snow caves and trenches.

I would love to be able to use them but conventional bivies push my claustrophobia button bad. I tried several and discarded all. In particular I really wanted the TiGoat Raven Omni to work for me. One night I set it up in the living room and climbed in it. About a second and a half after the zipper closed the panic attack started and I very nearly cut my way out of it before finding the correct zipper. I did not know I was claustrophobic .. I've worked under cars and in confined spaces under houses quite a bit. It really was not pretty.

I use bug bivies quite a lot and shelter under a tarp overhead if needed. No such issues with them.

One thing that comes to mind .. my bug bivies are all hooped bivies and keep the material from touching my face. None of those conventional bivies was hooped. Probably before I completely give up on them I need to try a water repelling hooped bivy.
I hate Bivys…but I also love them.

It’s complicated but it’s better than carrying weight when you’re not sure if you want to stay out or come home. I like my Rab but have a couple Borah models that are more zip up bags without structure. I like this ridge runner - very cramped but can handle wind, rain & light snow ok. After this unit I go to my Kifaru SuperTarp.
