Kifaru Pack - 03/23/20
So I bought the Kifaru 1/8" Duplex lite Frame and the Cargo Net. I have had the pack about a week now and I didn't want to write to much to soon. First the construction is 100% and second to none. The frame fit me perfect though I probably should have gotten the Medium Belt over the Large. This frame is super simple and easy to set up. Trip one with it was 7 miles with 45lb Rouge Bumper Weight on it. Honestly it felt like 25lb to 30lb, maybe I have just gotten stronger but it felt like the load was less than what it feels like on other packs I have used. The load never once loosened up and I never needed to readjust any straps. So I couldn't leave it alone on day one so about two hours after returning from my 7 mile hike I was itching to try a real load in it. So I threw on another 45lb Rouge Bumper Plate. I thought for sure with 90lbs on the pack I would need to adjust something or alter something. Put the pack on and headed out with the idea I would do 1 to 1-1/2 miles with the 90lbs just to see how everything felt. After about a 1/4 mile I stopped took it off and adjusted the chest strap. It was riding to high so I moved it as low as you can. Much better for me there. So I got to the half mile make and decided I wanted to go farther. So load felt great everything was perfect, so hell keep on trucking. Well I ended up doing 4 miles total with the 90lb load. Nothing moved no need to adjust or tighten any straps. Day one in the books and I am loving it.
Day two I want to see how it carries in steep terrain both up and down. So I took it to one of my favorite peaks in the Bitterroot. This climb has switchbacks, rock/boulder crossings, and straight up climbing and a short section of scrabbling. I went with 65lb as I wasn't sure how it would handle and I didn't want to have to leave a plate and comeback for it. All I can say is absolutely NO complaints! Load stayed tight, and carried like a dream. This trail is about 3-1/2 miles up to the top of the toughest part. I did not go to the peak due to snow, time, and the final section is a cake walk anyways. Driving home I couldn't stop thinking about seeing how it carried really heavy. So I loaded up 140lbs and took it for a stroll around the block. Now I am sure someone will come on and say 140lb is really heavy? Well yeah I don't carry more than 100lb or plus a little. So 140lb is over anything I normally do. Day two in the books and I love the frame so far.
Day three I figure lets give it a good distance with the 140LB load. So I did a 6 mile out and back from my house on the road, there are a few decent hills on this route. All I can say is that I wish I had bought this frame a long time ago. It is a solid frame that distributes the load very well to your hips. The straps all stay where you adjust them to, no slippage. 140lb doesn't feel bad at all on this frame. I am very pleased with my purchase and believe next up is getting the Striker to add to it.
I have plenty of time this week to work with it some more and get it broken in before Spring Bear season! But so far it is a Winner.
