I have recently purchased a slightly used 7" Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Mag for hunting deer here in Michigan. I am seriously considering having it Mag-Na-Ported and an action job done on it. I only live 50 miles from Mag-Na-Port

I primarily want to target shoot and hunt deer with this handgun. I hunt out of Shadow hunter enclosed hunting blinds.

I just bought a 2 power Burris scope for it yesterday and a Wigand mount.

Yes or No to the porting?

Why? Recoil isn’t that bad, just tone it down some. So no.

Rent or borrow a 4" Smith 29/329/629 and shoot a couple of cylinders of 300/1350 fps through it.

After that your SRH will kick so much less, you'll be embarrassed to shoot it with both hands.

Put a 9.5" heavy barrel on it. Then you get more leverage against recoil and the snort is farther out from your face. OR, just get a 45 Colt and get as much energy without all the snort. But make a trip to MagNaPort anyway. Your gun is more likely a 7.5" barrelled gun. Nitpicking I know. Be Well, RZ.

I had a super blackhawk magna ported and it tamed recoil a little, but, was obnoxious to shoot due to noise.

I have a couple of Magna Ported revolvers, both Smith and Wessons, both Performance Center guns that came that way, a .41 magnum and a .44 Magnum. I would prefer that they weren't. The noise isn't really an issue, as I won't shoot any handgun without hearing protection. In both cases, the scopes collect a certain amount of fouling from the redirected gases.

If the recoil is a problem to you, you should first try different grips. The Rugers seem to have pretty narrow grips when they come out of the factory, so some nice broad grips that fit your hand well will make the gun much more comfortable to shoot.

For a garden variety 44 mag, I wouldn’t. If you’re thinking of shooting TONS of 300 grainers, perhaps, but for regular old 240 gr jhp’s, to take the occasional deer, I’d leave it alone.

I swear I lost some hearing as a 16y/o, touching off a Super Blackhawk inside a closed blind (muzzle out, but cylinder/forcing cone inside). I’d probably be deaf if it had been Magnaported...

Just to add: I also have a 7 1/2" Mortal (not Super)Redhawk and with 300 grain +P loads of 2400 (per a Brian Pearce article 12 years ago or so) the recoil is negligible. A Super Redhawk is probably about the last .44 Magnum I would consider for Magna-Porting.

Ok,,,,, "No", but only from the standpoint of your usage, as outlined above, but for my use here in Alaska, it is a "BIG" YES, I've got the 2-Port Job on my Bisley SBH-Hunter 44Mag, which started out as a 7", but is now a 6", and Ported,,,,,, it makes for a better follow-up shot on Bears..... Lj

No. The only place I can think of for porting on a personal firearm is for Open division in USPSA , Steel challenge, or 3-gun.

I met Larry Kelly back in 1973 at the original Mag-na-Port shop, we became good friends. I learned a lot about guns and boats from him. Watched the business grow. Had a "Stalker" Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag. built a gift from Bill Ruger that I met at Larry's new shop on Production Drive. I've shot hundreds of game animals and shot thousands of rounds of hunting loads, in the gun. Having a gun Mag-na-Ported does reduce recoil and help very much with muzzle rise.

One thing to take in account asking a question on the inter net your going to get a lot of opinions and not much more. Many don't even own or have even shot what you are interested in.

I have rifles, shotguns and pistols all done by Mag-na-Port there is a reduction in recoil and yes there is a perceived amount of sound. Just wear headphones or ear plugs, you should any ways no matter if it has a muzzle devise or not.

Those big pistols are way too noisy to start with. I'm sure I have hearing loss from my misspent youth, shooting .44 Mag's without ear protection. We just didn't know then what we know now. I remember my ears ringing after a bunch of shooting. Well, they still ringing....

The main thing I have against Mag-na-porting is the increased noise. Regardless of the benefits, it's not worth it, IMO.

I've not had a SRH that was Magna ported but I've owned 2 FA83's that were Magna ported and I don't detect any reduction in recoil but they do reduce muzzle rise. The reduction in muzzle rise induces the recoil more to the web of the shooting hand

I can't detect any increase in noise with Magna porting or muzzle brakes on revolvers. The barrel cylinder gap is much closer to one's ears and the exit pressure is higher thus louder at this point

Well, looked at another way, if you shoot'em long enough, for sure you won't be able to tell a difference....

I recently purchased a Smith & Wesson M/629 that had been Magna ported, the muzzle definately does stay down and I didn't notice increased noise. I bought the revolver because it was a first year and was pinned & recessed, if it had not been Magna ported I would not have it done but I'm happy with it the way it is.
