Just wondered what's the best or favorite 1911 mag. I got 4 mags, and none of them will feed swc and sometimes jhp reliably. I got 2 factory, 1 Promag, and a Nighthawk. None have amazed me yet. Thanks
Chip McCormick Powermags have been good for me.
Mec-Gar

Check Mate

I have no use for SWC bullets in a .45 auto, so I can't say what would work best with them (wadcutter feed lips, for starters, but beyond that, I don't know). But I have no problems with any kind of JHP I have tried so far in any of my pistols.
Wilson Combat 47D, 8 rounders.

^^^This^^^

They feed every type of bullet I handload. From SWC’s to WFN SWC’s, to every type of factory JHP.

I also have some Wilson Combat 8 rounders, too.
They work well with the JHP stuff, but are not super reliable like the Chip McCormick Power Mags with every type of bullet & ammo.
Wilson Combat 47D, Chip McCormick Power Mags, Tripp Cobra Mags, Check Mate.
When I was slumming a 1911, the Wilson Combat 47D was the mag that worked in multiple pistols.
Thanks guys. I looked on a Youtube video and the guy on there suggested Sig Sauer. Almost nobody really suggests polishing feed ramp anymore. That's what the old guys always did. Took care of the bullshit, if it was done right.
Chip McCormick - especially with the 10mm. The Wilson 47D is fine for the .45 ACP
Metalform.
wilson combat mags.

Wilson Combat 47D has worked well for me in .45 acp

Wilson ETM’s are the ones that I stuck with, my 47D’s all got Tripp Super 7 kits in them.

The 8 round 47D’s are in a 7 round tube, the ETM’s are in a longer tube designed for 8 rounds and have a stronger spring.

If I am correct They made them for Colt OEM

Maybe Colt had multi manufactures (probably did)

Hank
Wilson, Tripp research, Chip McCormick,
CMC powermags
Wilson 47D with new follower and spring
Read up on 1911 mag feed lip design.
+1 on what others said about .45 8rd in 7rd length tubes.

I'd not screw with the ramp.

A bunch of 1911 fail to feed are caused by poorly fit extractors. Some guns come with poorly done barrel ramps.
I am sticking with my Chip McCormick mags. They just plain work.
I used Shooting Star(McCormick) 8 rounders(45ACP) for the 5-6 years I shot IPSC, with some Wilson thrown in. I eventually gravitated toward Wilson 8 rounders & like them enough that I have no desire to mess with others besides Tripps. I've not tried The Tripps, but a friend that is very much in the know of such things & still competes is a fan of them.

FWIW, Wilson owns McCormick mags now I believe.

Now, poor function of SWC's & HP's................ So many variables here, no mag could solve the problem. Reloads?? if so, cartridge OAL is very critical, as is proper crimp. Beyond that... the gun can offer a multitude of problems.

Particulars?

Yep very true. Damn I have a military mag made in 1924 that feeds SWC and HP just fine.
Wilson Combat and Chip McCormick are the only two I carry.

Being cheap with magazines is like being cheap with a parachute, and relying on "hope" as your strategy.

Wilson Combat, Tripp Cobra mags, followed by Chip McCormick. All about the same.

MM
Wilson Combat mainly but Trip Research work good too!

Yep, and well said. Not much worse than a “pretty good” parachute.
Went through 300 rounds of .45 ACP loaded with 200-grain H&G #68 LSWC a week ago.

Wilson Combat 8-round Elite Tacticals through my Les Baer.

No hiccups.

Headed out there later with same setup.

I like the Wilson Combats. Heard the Chips are awesome too, but no experience with them.

Old pic, but except for the factory ammo and a few non-Wilson mags, all this is headed to the range with me.

Rick,

You did well getting that gun.

That gun, combined great mags and a bunch of H&G #68s is pretty darn hard to beat.

You can use that bullet loaded light for target work, or loaded hot for defense and have everything covered.

The more I shoot it, the more I like it. smile

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Hard to beat a Les Baer.

Looking good, Rick!
Ed Brown (aren’t they made by someone else?) and Wilson ETM
Checkmate and Megyar also make pretty good magazines for the 1911 in .45. I have a couple of each, along with many others, all seem to work just fine with my 200g. SWC or hardball.
Wilson ETM and 47D, your gun might need help on the feed ramp and throat. Tiny changes can make a bit difference
Wilson Combat 47D has worked well for me.
