I have two Burris handgun scopes that are having similar problems. One is on a TC Encore barrel in 375 H&H and after about 10 rounds has a large black mass in the center of the
sight picture. The other is on a SuperRed Hawk in 454
and has black cracks throughout the sight picture.

It seems as if the coating has let go, but maybe you all
have a better idea.

I otherwise really like these scopes brightness and field of
view. I'm not very impressed with Burris' ability to stand
up to punishment.

After these problems I'm putting my reliable Leupolds on.

Heavy recoiling magnum handguns are probably the hardest on scopes of any class of firearm. They not only kick hard, but really fast as well.
The fixed magnification scopes will take recoil better/longer than the variables.
Leupold's impact test standard for their handgun scopes is 1500 g's for 5000 times. This is the highest test standard I know of. E

Thanks Eremicus and SRW. The Encore barrel is braked (duh) but the 454 isn't. I've used a Leupold for years on a 338 Win. with
no problems. I really liked the Burris scopes' wide field of view
(superior to the Leopold) and good brightness. I'll send them in
to Burris and see what they say.
