I am looking for a nice pair of Sambar stag grips for a Ruger Blackhawk.

I've posted this in the classifieds section as well, but I thought that I would give this a try.

ebay usually has a good selection of grips for sale.

I've never used them, but Grashorn's gets great reviews.

Expect to pay big bucks for real Sambar Stag... I bought two pair a few years ago and after selling off all my Blackhawks but one, I put one set on GunBroker...and was shocked when they brought over $300.00.

I'm pretty sure this is the guy who made the Elk Horn grips for my Blackhawk. He used to post here.
If it's the same, the guy is not just a craftsman, he's an artist.
I watched him make the grips and he would not settle for anything less then perfection.
He kept putting them on and taking them off until the fit was absolutely perfect.

Well, you have to decide if you want real Sambar stag or elk. Because it ain't the same. Elk can be very nice if they're picky but stag tends to be harder, denser and has more dramatic bark.

I like my Elk grips ---- But they don't measure up to Sambar Stag.

The set that you sold is EXACTLY what I am looking for...

Use pine. Then burn it with a plumbers torch.

I like real stag grips, they just feel right.
But as a poster said before, you pay for what you want.
Here are stags I put on one of my Colt SAA I bought them because they had just enough bark showing, I don't like to much bark, or bark to deep.

I had a set of Grashorns Elk put on my custom 357 Bisley Ruger. I have been making grips for single actions for over 60 years and have never seen a better fitting or looking set. I asked for about 1/3 bark and they were absolutely as ordered. If there is anyone making better grips I would like to see them but I probably couldn't afford them.

I just got a set in that are for an NM Blackhawk. I'm not sure exactly what that means as I'm not all that familiar with the Ruger grip frames, but they would require some fitting to work on my NM Flat Top Blackhawk. they're a bit long up behind the frame.



At this point I'm indecisive on whether to keep and use them, or just sell them. I like pretty guns and grips but my firearms gets used, if you know what I mean.

The grips on my Ruger NM Blackhawk, .45 Colt, are Sambar stag, although you can't tell too much from this picture. I bought the Ruger Convertible in 1978 and the Sambar stag grips in 1979. Been using them ever since.



I still have the original factory walnut grips, box, .45 ACP cylinder, and paper.

Carries well out in the boonies.

That's stag on that Ruana and well worn down stag on that old Camillus Stockman, which is always in my pocket
