I went to the range today and took my Remington R1. Other than VZ grips it is stock. I had 3 or 4 cases with a mangled mouth. The load was 200gr LRNFP bullets and 6.0gr of Universal. Only one case was jammed in the ejection port and not a stove pipe jam. The case was caught between the slide and rear of the barrel and inline with the barrel but half way out of the pistol. The jam was the last round out of the magazine. I know two of the ejected cases that were mangled were from a Wilson 8 round magazine. The fact that two cases that were ejected looked like the jammed case is stumping me as to the cause. I haven't had this problem before but I'm not sure if the problem is the magazine or the load.

Extractor issue? One of my Glocks was doing the same thing. The extractor did not release the brass and when the slide tried to go back into battery it slammed the brass into the top of the barrel chamber. My fix was an embarrassing but simple fix.

Did your brass eject after being mangled? Only one was jammed in the gun. I could understand the brass mouth looking like this caught in the gun but ejected cases is what I don't understand?

Does the pistol eject normally with factory ammo? I have had the same problem with loads that turned out to be a bit too light. Might try either a slightly heavier powder charge (say, 6.3 grains) or a lighter recoil spring. It looks to me like the slide is not cycling fully to the rear on every shot.

wildhobbybobby, I'm wondering if the load is a bit light just like you posted. The pistol functioned fine with FMJ reloads and factory ammo. Thanks for your input.

No, the ejected brass was fine. I was shooting 10mm Auto from Underwood. It was hot.

Mine was definitely an extractor problem - due to how I reassembled it the night before, I reversed a small part and the extractor was not able to move down effectively trapping some brass and ramming it straight into the top of the barrel chamber. What really surprised me is the RSOs let me finish my qualification. I had 4 of those malfunctions out of 30 rounds. I was pretty sure was it was and after we were done I disassembled the slide and fixed the extractor spring. I took it out and fired 2 15-round magazine without a single hiccup.

I have had this exact issue with 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 Auto loads when the load was a little too light as was referenced by another poster. My brass looked just like what you show. Raise your powder charge slightly and I'll bet it clears up.
