I am trying to build up a few supplies for the recent purchase of a Blackhawk 41 Mag from the classifieds here.

Get a fugged up look when asking for .410 bullets, one guy says "Bullets for a 410?" I do have some brass coming from deerstalker so getting a start at least, Midway USA has both Starline and Remington brass right now.

The local shops are down to either Win 296 or H110 and no 2400 at all. Are there any other alternatives to these or are these pretty much the powders for the full house 41 Mag, 210 grain jacketed loads?

They, 296 and 110, are one and the same and are ideal for full house loads. There are others but why bother?

I must agree with Ed, use 296/H110 if possible.

But if you can't find it, Accurate #9, Lil Gun and the 4227s come to mind. I'm sure one or two of the Vihtavuoris also, not sure which.

Pretty sure you will get top end velocities with AA#9, not saying accuracy will meet you there but if it's velocity you want AA#9 is probably best with jacketed. Switching gears I only use cast & mine are heavier, either 230 grs or 250 grs & I go with 2400. H110 as Ed stated will give you more speed but I've used 2400 since the 60's & old habits are hard to break. Took my last elk using the 250 gr LBT with 9.2 grs of Unique running about 1150 fps, broke both front shoulders & exited, works for me!

H110/w296 if you want her to be all she can be.

I use a lot of Titegroup ànd Universal for lite loads, (650-750 fps w/ 170 and 210 gr bullets). Ànd I use Hs-6 for moderate loads. Unique also works well and a bunch of us used a lot of Blue Dot for those 1000 fps loads. But the distributer has told us to no longer use Blue Dot in the 41.

The Hornady 210 gr XTP is pretty much the Holy Grail in 41 cal bullets. The Sierra 170 can be pushed extrèmely fast, or it makes a pleasant shooting load at moderate velocity. You can get the 210 gr Berry's flat point plated bullet from Midway or direct from Berry's. They are a cheaper alternative to regular jacketed bullets, and are very tough.

I do have a couple hundred of the Hornady 210 gr loaded in the back of he safe, but I primarily shoot home made bullets in my 41 caliber revolvers. I shoot a lot of 170 gr cast at about 650 fps from a Titanium Tracker. It is quite pleasant. The 4 inch N frame smith is mostly fed 210 gr cast over HS-6 at 1000 fps. And the Ruger SBH hunter model gets 250 gr cast over 21 gr of H110.

Taking the bride to the airport this AM so I will be hitting several shops while in the city to see what I can pick up. Hopefully get a few pounds of H110/W296.

I had thought about Universal Clays for some lighter target and woods walking loads as well.

Don't know where you live but the shops in my area at least usually have bullets in .41 on the shelf...rarely brass however.

As to powders, all the shops around New England seem to have lots of powder... And with the .41 you really only need two...Unique and H110/296.

Unique can be used for light target (6-7 grains) and duplicate the original 210 Police load of 950 fps with 8.0 grains. With a 210 grain bullet 9.0 will get you 1100 fps and 10.0 1180...all from a 4" barrel.

Using H110/296 is for full loads only. Anything less than full loads gets inconsistent velocities and unburned powder. You will also get the highest velocities and lowest standard deviation. My very simple formula for H110/296 with any cast or jacketed bullet is to measure the bullet from the crimping groove to the base of the bullet. Then fill the case so that the base of the bullet sits right on top of the powder with zero airspace and very little compression. This will run from 26 grains with a 170 Sierra (1630 fps from a 6.5" BH) to 22-24 grains with most of the 210 jacked bullets.

But one can use any powder suitable for .44 Magnum. I have used SR-4756, Blue Dot, 2400 and 231 (for target loads). 2400 is another powder that does best at full speed otherwise there is often unburned powder.

I like Winchester LP Primers for SA guns. They are hot for igniting Ball Powder like H110/296 and seem to help Unique burn cleaner....but any Magnum pistol primer will work.

And if you don't have one look into getting a Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die...

If you cant find any Unique, CFE Pistol subs nicely for light to mid power loads; I actually think its better in the 41 and others.

Lil gun is a good one to consider for full power loads if you also shoot the Hornet or Bee. I've been getting ~150 fps over my old 296/110 loads best efforts in my K-Hornet.

With bullets up to and including 220gn I favor SR4756 for light to medium loads (CFE Pistol now that 4756 is no longer made) and 2400 for heavy loads. It seemed to me that H110 gave a lot more muzzle blast but no better performance than 2400. I was not impressed with AA9. Liked Blue Dot but lot-to-lot variation was extreme and it is no longer recommended by Alliant.

With 250 and 265 gn WFNGC H110 is very good and Lil’ Gun even better giving higher velocity and tighter groups. 300MP is a viable substitute for H110 and somewhat cleaner burning. 2400 gave great accuracy with 265 gn at 1150 fps. CFE Pistol gives great accuracy in my 5.5” Redhawk with 265 gn at just around 1050 fps but is only mediocre in the Model 57.

I strongly recommend you buy just one brand of brass and stick with it. In my S&W I can use up to 18.0 gn of 2400 with Lyman #410459 in Remington cases without sticky extraction (all six cases ejected without resistance). With Winchester cases more than 16.2 gn will cause sticky extraction.

I use Federal 150 primers for all loads and have seen no advantage with magnum primers.

i pretty rarely buy factory jacketed bullets, but there are all kinds of distributors such as midway, graffs, natchez and so on.
most also sell plated bullets like berry's.
Mostly, i roll my own having a bunch of moulds.
I have used a number of different powders like accurate, unique, 231, 2400 and so on.
I am probably odd on this but have never much cared for H110 between it's pretty tight in the range between a starting load and a firewall load.
As to brass, i have quite a bit acquired through the years, but mostly starline direct from starline.
500 of their casings would last a long long time.
I would get a taper crimp die too. If reloading.
there is quite a bit of range in bullet weight in the 41, even tho a load of reloading booklets don't reflect it. I have done 170 to 300grain bullets, just like some others posting on here.
Xtp's are often mentioned I think cause of their hardness, and i do load them, but being cheap shoot mostly lead.
But I can state a gold dot puts a massive hole through something.
i should add per the suggestion of someone already posting on this topic, i also picked up some titegroup and universal, it works well with the loads i typically shoot.
But i have gone the other way from max loads, I am more in the 41special range now.

...before using Lil' Gun in Magnum revolvers...seems to work well in closed breech guns like a TC or rifle but there have been problems with trying to push the limit with Lil' Gun...

I love my .41 Mag but many many times I asked myself why I didn't buy a .44 Mag.

Nothing keeping you from getting one.

I like frontal area and solids; the 41 gives up to the 44 what the 44 gives up to a 45 Colt in most traditional bullet profiles..

Quite honestly all three do in deer sized stuff in similar fashion.

For revolver dimensions and uniformity, the 41 beats both with ease.

I wish I had my 41Mag S&W Model 57 with a 6" barrel back.
It was stolen and I have never replaced it.

That is a sad thing to hear of a stolen 57. I have a 6" 57 and if I had to sell my guns, it'd be one the very last I'd let go of.

I shoot 210gr Nosler JHP's over H110 for hunting loads. I've messed with some laser cast and h110 for range loads. I haven't quite settled on what I want to use for general plinking/practice loads yet.

I have a 6" 657 and would hate to part with it. Sad to hear of a stolen 57.

I have a S&W 58 and Love it.... I shoot more of the "police loads" in it and it is a pleasure to shoot. pushing a 210 lead bullet around 950 fps... wonderfully accurate

I think the 58 is a trim little gun, kind of like a little fat model 10. Works real good with 41special or downloaded to 41special ranges.
I like it a lot better than some of the newer inventions.
