Anyone try one yet?

For $270 it's hard not to give it a go, even if they rate them at 60-70%
The one they use for an illustration is really beat up looking. And those grips are the worst.
This is one,....4" HB RB,....but I went to Bud's and picked it out.

nice looking piece.
Bristoe,

That looks super nice! Did those grips come with or are they your work?
Here's my five screw, four inch, pencil barrel, M&P.

My 4" Bull Barrel:

I've got a nice six inch five screw, too, but have no picture of it, and don't feel like digging it out of the safe.

I like the Model 10 and the pre-10, i.e., the M&P.

So those you got from Bud's or you're about as helpful as ever?
Yeah, all from Bud’s. No hand select. Just luck of the draw. Do you believe me? I have some swamp land I’d like to interest you in, too.
I ordered two yesterday. I have been watching for them for awhile.

Wanted 3, but didn't want to spend the $. (Tightass)

These will belong to the 11 and 15 year old daughters.
The plan is for them to own a 22, AR-15, 12 guage, and handgun when they move out.
Quality is important, status is not.
I looked at them yesterday (I made a road trip), but they were, as noted, rough. I wasn't too interested anyway, the grips were oddball things, and besides, I already have a .38 I don't shoot much anyway. I didn't think another was indicated.

The Star BM 9mms were much more interesting, AND in better shape for less money, but I didn't want one of those, either. I guess I'm jaded. They did have two Winchester 75 target rifles, which were more interesting to me, and fairly priced. I suppose I should have bought one of those, but it just didn't flip my switches.

They're Ahrends grips.
I think the prime period for picking up trade-in Model 10s that are halfway decent has passed us by. Back ten or fifteen years ago, some nice ones were available for around $400.00. I think we're down to the dregs now.
Back when they were best, a fixed sight 38, was as attractive as the clap.
Now, I want some. 38's, not the clap.

You know which Model 10s were always desirable? The three inch bull barrel, round butt frame, versions. Even back in the 1980s, owning one of those was the mark of someone who knew what's what. Real hard to come by today. I've got one of the stainless ones, but they're called Model 64s in stainless.
I see Model 10's all the time. Just not ones in good enough shape I'm interested in buying.
Wouldn't mind having one, but with my Ruger Speed Six 4" 38 Special, that is in much better shape, it's just hard to justify.
What I'd like to find is a Model 64 with the "pencil barrel" in 3 or 4 inch barrel.
(The 3" is HARD to find. - I think that all of them were LE contract revolvers.)

yours, tex

I've got a 64 with a 3" bull barrel and round butt frame. I don't think they made a 3" pencil barrel.
Model 10 ordered! Hoping for a good one.

French law enforcement Model 10's are likely to be rough, since they have been thrown on the ground so often when surrendering. smile

Let us know how it looks.
Mine will hit the FFL tomorrow.
Not sure what to hope for.

One for each girl.
If they are decent, Mom and Dad might want one.
Mine are rough.
One has a dime sized rust spot behind and under the cylinder latch.
The other is worse. Both pitted.
Function seems perfect. The uglier one has a very nice D/A pull.
The beautiful grips pictured came on them. Unfortunately.

Not really disappointed. They will, do what I wanted.
But, if they had been in a store at that price, they would still be there.

You could strip the finish off, re-polish, then apply some sort of quick black finish to them, without adding much at all to the price you paid.
Picked mine up this afternoon. I'm pleased. Plenty of rubs and bumps, but minimal rust and most of bluing is there.

Now to order new grips.
I can pickup damn near mint Model 10's around here for $350.

Like this? I picked this one up about 2 years ago. It is the first no dash (pencil barrel) Model 64 I had ever seen, that I can recall.

There's been one just like it in the showcase of the gun store down the street for, I believe, about $550.00. Nice guns.

$450-550. Don't remember exact price, as I wasn't looking for a tapered barrel, although the stainless finish caused me to give it a second thought. Would really like to find a 10-5 bull barrel like Charlie's.
Got mine today, was pretty happy with it really. You can see there is some surface rust but not bad & my son is a gunsmith so we can blue it if I decide to. The hard rubber grips came on it & I was surprised, they feel really good although I've never heard of the brand & never seen anything quite like them. I may build a replacement pair but first I'll leave these on & shoot it for a while.
It locks up tight & the bore looks great. Shot 2 cylinders full just before dark & it shot just fine, but a bit low, I can fix low, can't fix inaccurate. I think this might be the second model 10 I've ever owned. Had an old Victory model back in the 60's. Question, I'm guessing they should be ok with +P loads? The load I shot tonight would be considered on the low end of +P, 5.3 grs of W231 & a 125 gr cast.

Yours is nicer than both of mine.
Those grips are uniquely ugly, but I agree, they are comfortable. More so in D/A.
The rust spots are getting better on mine. A wet wiping with Hopes, and rubbing an oak
scrap on it has removed a lot. It's sitting wet with Hopes now. They will get brass wool and oil
treatment tonight.

Fire away with the +P loads.

What 'dash' number is yours?
Absolutely, +P. These are all-steel guns. The whole "not for +P" thing originated with the introduction of alloy frames and/or cylinders.
These are French LEO turn ins?

Sweet piece.
Mine is a dash 8 & it had a serial number stamped across the left top strap, not sure if you can see it in the photo. That's the one we wrote down on the 4473 form. When I got home I noticed another serial number inside on the crane by the model number which is probably the true serial number. Guessing I better get back with my FFL guy & re-do the paper work?

Dick
Dick,
Those grips are Trausch grips. I haven't seen them for the k frame Smiths but I have some for Ruger SP101's. They are excellent grips and were made in France for just a few models of Revolvers. The ones that I have are excellent and I'm very impressed with how they handle recoil. Mr. Trausch died in 2012 and his wife had no interest in the business so it shut down. There will be no more grips made like that, and as a result of how good they are the price has gone up for them. The few people that know of them are very impressed. On the ones that I have, they are a one piece grip that fits very tightly and held in place by a Chicago screw. Load up some serious +P 38 specials and I think you will be impressed.

Interesting. So those who are getting these guns with these stocks might inadvertently be getting some rare collectable stocks.

The Real Hawkeye {Interesting. So those who are getting these guns with these stocks might inadvertently be getting some rare collectable stocks. }

Yes and no. Not everyone is familiar with the Trausch name. The ones that are, don't necessarily know all the models of guns he built them for. The gun that is most often used with those grips are the SP101. Still he has been dead 6 years. People familiar with them will step up, just not every one is. They aren't easy to come by. I have a set on the classifieds now and I'm surprised they didn't sell quickly. Actually SHOCKED they didn't. People that are familiar with them really like them for how hand filling they are and how much control they give with recoil. While the Ruger SP101 is heavy for it's size, truth is most people shoot 38 specials in them. The ones that shoot 357 mag in them really like the grips.
Cariboujack, thanks for the info on the stocks! Yes Trausch is the name right on the stocks & although they are a bit on the ugly side they are a very comfortable grip, I'm impressed with them. Shot a bunch of ammo through the gun today & it shoots really good, just shooting everything low because I was trying to shoot 125 HP's. So, I'm going to try some of my 140 gr slugs & see how much higher they shoot, if that doesn't work I'll go to a bit heavier slug until I find the sweet spot. Don't want to file on the sight just yet, there isn't a lot there to begin with.

Dick
Model 10's dote on 158's
The serial number should be on the bottom of the trip frame. The numbers inside the yoke cutout are assembly numbers.

Difficult to find

Remembered where I'd seen the.Model 64. The price was $425, with box. Not a bad price, indeed.
The difficult to find comment was concerning a 10-5 with a heavy barrel. I thought Charlie's was a 10-8 also.

The 10-6 was made at the same time as the 10-5 and is what you find with the heavy barrel. I've never seen a 10-5 with a heavy barrel outside the internet.
I stand corrected. Looks like Charlie's is a 10-8, from a pic he posted with his K22.
Bud's sent me one that looks very similar in condition to Idaho1945's, and is also a 10-8 model.

It shoots extremely tight groups with 158's and 130's out to 20 yards.

POI is a touch low. I'll get that corrected with a file.

The Trausch grips are very comfortable. I can definitely see how for they would be beneficial to law enforcement. But I just can't get past the fugly factor.
