Hi guys. Just bought my first 500 JRH. Need some advice/help on getting setup for reloading. Would appreciate any load data. Plan on H110 being used for most loads, but any would be appreciated. Also what is the best penetrating hardcast for this? Looking for something i ntje 400-440 range. I would think 500 smith dies would work, but not sure. Any help there would be appreciated as well. Thanks guys!

You can use 475 Linebaugh load data or 500 Wyoming Express data for starter. Your recoil level will be your top end loads.

500 S&W dies do indeed work. Jack Huntington has some load data on his website, both mild and wild as I recall. H110 is what you want for the top end loads. That round begs for a 440 grain hard cast bullet.

I've read a little dated info abut die issues. Will the RCBS dies all work? Expander, crimp ect ect

As far as hardcast goes, will the 440 Cast Performance work well? I've got a few of these from past 500 smiths I've owned

I’m sure the cast performance 440 will work fine.

Did you purchase a BFR, Ruger or FA in 500 JRH. Don’t forget that 475 Linebaugh data works for the 500 JRH.

Rimrock makes a great 440. I've used Cast Performance's 440 as well. The Rimrock seems to be a harder alloy. I only use top-end 296/H110 loads in the .500 JRH.

You made a great purchase! I've killed some pretty big animals with that caliber.

And what dies do you guys use? I know 500 smith will work. I have RCBS set of dies for the smith, so will they work without modification? Thanks for the help guys!

Call RCBS get them to send you a expander plug for 50AE. I use cut down Starline 500 S&W cases and the 500 S&W expander bulges/buckles the case.Tell them what you are loading and they will send it for free.

I have a set of RCBS 50AE dies so I'll rob it out of there. Thanks

I can say the LEE mold for the 440 grain is certainly a value at under $30 and very accurate bullets can be cast,
they run a bit heavy with my alloy but shoot very consistent tight groups

just a bit of info on these lee "440 grain" 500 S&W bullet molds ,
with the gas check and lube on these cast bullets,
at least using my 95% WW alloy and 5% tin, mix,
the projectiles actually weigh about 470 grains
they are quite accurate (WITH THE GAS CHECKS)

NOT, too much airspace with 296. Now the man asked about the JRH, NOT the Wyoming or AE. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.
The JRH is the best .50 ever. The JRH takes more 296 then a .475. Do not fool with the load or you will get a failure and a destroy a gun. The .475 is best with a 420 gr and 26 gr of 296. The JRH with a 440 gr is best with 29.5 gr of 296. The .500 Linebaugh takes 31.5 gr. The S&W takes 34 to 38 gr.
Yes you use the Hornady .500 S&W dies for the JRH. The JRH is actually a .500 S&W special. The Linebaugh takes a larger case and bullet..348 case. The JRH is .501" The Linebaugh is .510" to .512 in cast. Not easy to find and very expensive tools.
I made a mold for the .500 Linebaugh for whitworth, free. I have it and will convert to any handles you have Just pay shipping and it is yours. I spent months to make stuff free. Do you know what it takes to make a mold? I have no use for a .512 mold.
Can you answer for the JRH or bring in other calibers?

You are full of [bleep] as usual, Jack Hunting himself said you can use 475 Linebaugh data.

The .500 JRH and the .500 Wyoming Express are ostensibly the same.

Exactly

What is the current theory of which primer to use for the JRH?
Large rifle or large pistol? Just received 200 pieces of Buffalo Bore brass but no where on their site did they mention primer size.
Most likely the brass was made by Starline, and they do state large rifle primers for the 475 Linebaugh.
Posted By: RJM Re: 500 JRH - 05/27/20
Have been thinking about getting the same gun as I already have a 4" 500 S&W so all I would need to do is shorten some brass.

Since I have no intention of running full bore loads was wondering what those who own these use for powder for 900 to 1200 fps loads. At this point I use Unique for the 500..

18.0 350 Berry's Plated Bullet 1050 fps

20.0 350 Speer, Hornady or Sierra 1240 fps

I believe Jack Huntington says use large pistol primers.

Titegroup works well for 950 fps with a 440 grain bullet. Also W231

I have a 5" FA83 500 JRH converted by Jack H. Here are a couple of loads for RJM

These are all with Starline Cases and Fed 210 primers ( CCI 350s chronoed the exact same velo as the 210s in the below 4227 load)

10.0gr HP-38 440gr WLNGC (Rimrock) ........ 900 fps

15.0gr HS-6 440gr WLNGC (Rimrock) ........ 1,050 fps

26.0gr 4227 440gr WLNGC (Rimrock) ........ 1,200 fps

The following is my current go to load (about as much recoil as I can tolerate any more).

325gr Swift A Frame, 33.7gr H110, .............. 1,320 fps

The hornady 350gr with 33.7gr H110 .......... 1,355 fps

I shot these off the toneau of my pickup at 52 yds with a 4x leupold on the 5" M83. The 26.6 was 4227, the rest were 15gr of HS6.
