Wow - a couple of veteran shooters brought this cool sport to our club, and we had our first Steel Challenge shoot today. What a hoot!

It's fun, challenging, and did I say fun?

We had about 30 shooters, some with various semi-autos, a revolver shooter, and a couple of folks with pistol-caliber carbines. So cool. Lots of smiles! That the day was sunny and warm was welcome. I shot my 45 1911 Kimber, my usual carry gun. I made use of six magazines. Started the day with them all loaded and went through five of the danged things every stage. I ended up going through 150+ rounds of ammo, gave 10 rounds to another shooter who had run dry.

Nicest bunch of folks you could hope for. Older, young, men, women, different races. Everyone just enjoying a fun day at the range, slinging pistol ammo downrange!

This sport is a new thing for our club, and I am glad to see it here! I think the monthly matches are going to be very popular.

NICE! I'd like to attend something like that someday.

Good stuff!

How many stages were there in total?

We have been shooting the Steel Challenge this winter also and it's a hoot. Wait till you get a chance to try the USPSA. We had an indoor match Sunday and stage 2 was our longest with a 32 round minimum. The match had a total of four stages same as Steel Challenge. Good luck but be careful these games are addicting.

Always good to see (1) people shooting, and (2) having fun doing it. Keep posting pics and reports--it will inspire folks to go shoot!

Gunner, 4th Saturday of every month we do a Steel Challenge in Ada. 3Rd Saturday is Arcadia, 2nd Saturday is in Duncan when it's not too wet and Paul's Valley is starting one on the first Saturday.

Steel Challenge is fun pure and simple. Pick a match close to you and have fun. You can shoot rimfire, centerfire (non magnum) or pistol caliber carbine. I do the Ada match but need to get out more.

Dang, that will work TWR, appreciate the information, Ada is about 2.5 hrs N/NW of here, sounds like a full day of fun, would 150/200 rounds of 45 ACP fmj's run those matches?

Yep, we start at 10:00 and is over by 1:00 or 2:00, your first match is free. We have guys shooting rimfire race guns to everyday carry guns and quite a few shoot 10/22's. Usually 4 stages with 5 strings of 5 targets each for 100 targets total.

This Saturday is gonna be a little different than normal but will still be fun. Next Saturday we'll have an action pistol match.

10-4 Thanks, how much ammo does one need to bring?
Posted By: TWR Re: Steel Challenge - 03/18/19
150 would be plenty but we'll help you shoot all you can bring wink

I run a weekly SC match all summer, going to start up again next month.

I call it the dove hunting of the shooting sports. Inexpensive to get into, it ain’t complicated, fast paced, great comaraderie, and it’s still fun even if you miss.

Shooting it with a .22 rifle or a PCC is so much fun it oughtta be illegal.

I didn’t know all SC’s were open to everything.

A couple 10/22’s and handful of mags is all you need?
Posted By: TWR Re: Steel Challenge - 03/18/19
Rifles are cheating but I use a kinda sorta 22 race gun, I'm just a slow driver... I did however pick up another AR 15-22 when I feel like cheating.

Yep Travis, irons or red dots, 5 10 round mags or a couple of 25's will get you through if you don't miss. A bag to transport it to the starting table and you're good.

Rimfire pistols, rifles and pistol caliber carbines are shot from low ready, centerfire pistols are drawn from a holster. 5 mags are a good idea but if someone only has 2 or 3 we load for them to get em started. Heavy emphasis on safety and lot's of good natured ribbing make for a fun day and is a great way to get new shooters involved.

Thanks TWR. There was an IDPA match that I won't be able to make this Saturday so I will try and catch the next SC instead.
