'I'm thinking I'd like a cross draw holster for my new Colt Detective special when it comes home.

Wear it on my left side for a right hand draw, would sure be handy for sitting in a chair or while riding in a car.

Anyone have any experience with these?

What is a good brand to look at?

I use a Galco Hornet for my J-frames, love it.
But I also bought a Hornet for my Kimber ultra and I’m not a fan.

Andrews leather carjacker. Bought these for my G26 and a Kimber Pro Carry. Easy on/off. For when you exit the car. Doesn’t interfere with a seat belt.

Got a Mika IWB straight no cant for a J frame hammerless. Works and hides just as well right side or cross.

The Kirkpatrick looks good, but I really like the looks of the Andrews leather carjacker.

The horizontal looks like it would work GREAT for my use.

Am thinking one of these for my new to me Colt Detective Special would be ideal.

Just pulled up the link to Kirkpatrick leather again.

Am liking the 45 degree cant of this holster really well also.

Gotta do some serious thinking before I make a decision.

Some of the stitching on the belt loop worked loose on my Uncle Mikes plain jane black cordura holster with the snap. Been carrying my 6" 629 cross draw for a long time like that. For horseback riding, sitting in the truck, or whatever I am sold on it. Also keeps it out of the way when I want to sling my rifle when walking the woods.

Kirkpatrick makes a good holster. Got a compact undercover for my G26 about 6 years ago, it has held its shape and retention very well. Personally I don’t prefer to draw a concealed weapon across my body since you never know who or what is in front of the muzzle. The reason I picked up the Andrews was that for long drives or putzing around the city it puts the gun right in my lap where it’s easily accessible in times of need and I don’t have a pistol poking me in the ribs. Glock isn’t too bad, but my commander size 1911 in a high ride does. When I need to get out of the vehicle I just unsnap it and transfer the weapon to my other holster at which point the Andrews goes in the console till I return. If in a mandatory seat belt state, the lap belt just slides under the holster.

When I do crossdraw, I go retro. Holster is a Lewis Leather lefty from Los Angeles. Favorite holster for LA plainclothes dicks from the '30's thru the '70's. Very comfortable and fast.

I carry my Commander IWB crossdraw behind the left hip so the butt is forward... Use a very inexpansive REMORA. Can be had with or without a clip...mine has no clip and never moves...

The gun is never in the way and never exposed even with an open jacket or shirt...butt being forward also reduces "print"...

Real easy to draw left handed while seated not only in a car but in a booth in a restaurant. Shoot left handed or pass to the right...

This talk about holsters and police holsters made me think back to One Adam 12 and their fast clam holsters. And now days triple retention is the standard.

I've got my Colt on lay-away, and it will be a few weeks until I can bring it home, so I've got a while to think this over.

I've got a couple El Paso Double Agents. They're for my bigger guns. They work well.

As a holster maker myself, I approve of this recommendation.

Second the mention of Sam Andrews , have several of the Carjackers mentioned. And his stuff lasts , if you want am IWB crossdraw take a look at his McDaniels 2 , a wear it all day everyday comfortably IWB , at least for me.YMMV. He makes a damn fine shoulder rig too.

Been very pleased with a Desantis Dual Angle Hunter for wearing crossdraw, or strong side. With a 629 6.5”. Well made.

Just got a return message from Kirkpatrick leather.

They don't make the Texas cross draw for a Colt Detective Special.

So, that one is out.

They make a darn good looking cross draw holster!

Looks like top quality stuff.

Only problem...They're about 8-10 weeks out on making them.

Unfortunately that time line is about standard. Even Kirkpatrick took about that long for my Glock as the one I wanted wasn’t in stock. I forget the time line on Andrews but seems it was about that long as again what I wanted wasn’t available for immediate shipment. Privateer leather where I got my high ride for a 1911 was about 10 weeks. Good luck, I know it’s a bummer to wait, but seems that’s just how it is.

I know this thread has pretty much run it's course, but I like the Barranti Longhorn Companion. It works either strong side or cross draw. Stays put for me in the field. And it's usually in stock for common handguns.

I checked out the now dis-continued Bianchi leather upside down shoulder holster.

Nevada Gun Leather is now making a similar holster.

I read a lot of reviews on this style of holster and it sure sounds like a GOOD option for me.

I even watched The movie "Bullit" W/Steve McQueen last night, to see his upside down shoulder holster W/ a colt Detective Special in it!

Got to thinking (dangerous!) about having two guns hanging on my belt.

That's why I started thinking "shoulder holster" for the little Colt.

I pack a baton on my left side, and have a Sig P365 IWB on my right side.

Adding another gun to the left hip might be cumbersome.

This upside down shoulder holster is sounding better all the time.

Looks like one could draw well from it while sitting.

Whew, Bob, you go way back!

Lewis Leather on lower Sunset Blvd. closed down many years ago. I bought two shoulder holsters for a couple of S&W revolvers, and a good belt, plus a regualr 'jeans style belt with 50 .22 LR loops on it from Lewis ... a looooong time ago. I was never in there that there weren't a couple LAPD or LASD cops in there buying leather. I believe he died some time ago and there was no one to take it over.

Just watched their video on this product. Looks awesome. I am definitely ordering one or two of those. Perfect for long car trips.

The Carjacker looks really good, but I'm thinking my fat belly might get in the way and be uncomfortable, with a handgun sitting sideways on my belt, while setting down.

Just re-watched the video again, and it looks like the Carjacker sets on the off side hip, high enough that my gut wouldn't get in the way.

Might NEED one of these, as well as an upside-down shoulder holster.
