SIG p220

Glock 21

HK UPS/ HK45

similar weights and sizes... capacity to the Glock (obviously).

What say the crowd?

Did I miss a better one?

I’m no expert but I am thinking an aluminum frame Commander makes a great carry. A flavor of polymer with even more capacity is also worthy - say a Glock 30S.

For an all-arounder, carry qualities gotta be factored in.

Glock.

HK USP. It’s rated for 45 Super, it has 8 or 9 options for lockwork, and it’s no bigger than a G17.

All-Around...standard old Government Model with a good set of sights like BoMar or Novak and a good trigger.

Springfield Armory Range Officer

Colt Competition Model

Kimber Stainless Target II

...or anything along that line.

I've had all of those, and still have all but the Sig P220. You left out the Glock 30, which I guess is my favorite .45 for carry. Behind that is a Combat Commander sized 1911, such as my Ed Brown Kobra Carry. They both carry and shoot well.

My thoughts.............

Posted By: Terryk Re: Best all around 45 - 05/10/20
I like the standard 1911 for the cock and lock, plus a good trigger and sights. I have a Para Warthog that has alloy frame, 11 rounds, and a great trigger and sights. I think the barrel is 3.5 inches, and the fatty double stack fills my hand well. Not saying this models is the "best" but it does suit my likes a lot.
I have been carrying a 9mm Shield a bunch, so I could agree with the other poster that a 45 Shield is pretty easy to carry. I have a 9MM MP 2.0, and that seems kinda big, so I think a MP2.0 45 would feel too big also. Funny the Para seems more compact than my 4 inch 2.0 9mm. Maybe that is 1911 kool aid.

May God have mercy on my soul...........

G21 for an 'all around' .45. That said, of the pair of .45s I have left, I'm 50/50 between the 21 and the 320.

(High bore axis............drink!)

Original Seattle Detonics .45. Built by Colt custom gunsmiths.

But you must realize, that is my opinion only.
My vote doesn’t count. When I think 45 Auto, I think 1911 😂.

The Walther PPQ .45ACP should be looked at by anyone considering a Glock 21.
Posted By: MOGC Re: Best all around 45 - 05/11/20
M&P 2.0 .45 or Glock 21. I'm an M&P guy so it's my first choice, Glock a close second.
Posted By: smithrjd Re: Best all around 45 - 05/11/20
A good tuned 1911. You will not need anything else.

Seconded. That is probably the easiest to hit with plastic 45 I have ever shot and it crowds all but the full target 1911s I've shot.
Posted By: marktheshark Re: Best all around 45 - 05/11/20
I really like my Glock G30S. Basically the size of a G19 (even fits in some of my 19 holsters) with 10+1 capacity. Can use a 13rd G21 mag with spacer as a backup or nightstand duty mag. Carry it the most out of all the 45s I own which include several 1911s and a Glock 21. Carry it alot while bowhunting or hiking with Buffalo Bore 255+p hardcast flatnose.

I like a full size government model 1911. Like a Springfield Armory Range Officer.

As others have now said, if you're talking popular 45's of the semi-auto persuasion, you missed the Smith M&P and the Springfield. Probably second and third to the Glock respectively.

I had one of those back in the late 70's and I had a 451 barrel for it. It was a hoot to shoot. I have 1911s, but my favorite is my sig 227 with 14 rounds.
Posted By: bluestem Re: Best all around 45 - 05/11/20
I'll take my Ruger P90 over that high class stuff, lol.

Ayoob called the P90 the "Kalashnikov of 45s". Good enough for me, and my wallet thought the same.
Ringworm,

Started with a 1911 (U.S.Army), After getting out I've had two Govt. (5" barrel) models, a couple of Glock G21's (too fat for IWB carry and the grip is too large for me), had a M&P 45 which was ok and the grip fit me a lot better than the G21, Got a Glock G30 gen.4 which I like for it's size, capacity, but not it's trigger, last year bought what in my limited experience is the best 1911... a S&W 1911SC which is a lightweight commander (4.25" length barrel), This year bought a Kahr P45 which is going to give the S&W a run (con is the capacity 6+1).

My boy has a Walther PPQ in 9mm, after shooting it I would like to try the PPQ in 45acp, the trigger is better than any other striker fired pistol I have tried.

They are for damn sure built like a tank! Doubt you’d ever wear one out and they are amazingly accurate for what they are!

Hard to beat! I’d have a hard time choosing between that and a 1911 if I could only pick one! 🤠
Posted By: Waders Re: Best all around 45 - 05/11/20
The "All Around" thing is tough...Anything full-size gets criticized for not being EDC friendly. Smaller guns aren't as fun on the range.

I'm going to suck up to RickBin and agree with him--alloy frame Commander. I carried one for several years. Only ammo capacity motivated my switch to a plastic 9mm. But if I HAD to go back to carrying a .45, it'd be the Commander again. (But, I'll confess my bias: I love 1911's.)

Brings back memories. I used to carry a browning hi power for work but bought my own Springfield Armoury 1911 from the Berlin Rod and Gun club. Pachymyrs, extended mag release and safety and an inside the belt holster - damn I loved that gun.

Nowadays being older and wiser I'm not so sure I'd be so keen on cocked and locked without some of the modern features?

No, but based on the Sig's higher bore axis, you can bet there will be more muzzle flip than with the Glock.
Posted By: szihn Re: Best all around 45 - 05/12/20
I own a 1916 made Colt 1911, a SIG 250, a Kahr PM, a S&W Mountain Revolver and a Springfield XD all in 45 ACP.
Which is best all around?

Which ever one I have when I want to shoot something. All work well.

The most versatile however is the revolver because I can use 260 grain LBT bullets in it in 45 Auto-Rim brass and with my load I shoot them at over 1000 fps. (Yeah I know................it's way over the published accepted pressure for a 45 AR ) In addition to those loads I can also shoot any 45 ACP load on the market.
Posted By: RickyD Re: Best all around 45 - 05/12/20
I'm partial to my Les Baer Premier II with the 1.5" 50 yard guarantee and the .7" 50 yard proof target. Now, if only I could shoot that good! My Kimber Stainless Classic is nice and accurate. Now that I put the 460 Roland kit back in it, even more fun. The Bisley Blackhawk convertible makes for easy shooting with the ACP cylinder due to it's heft and my M&P 45's in full size, Compact and Shield can be very enjoyable, too. I prefer the Compact of that threesome. Then there's the 220........always. Speaking of always, I will always wish I had my other Kimbers back.

All in all, I think a 1911 in 45ACP with a Roland and a .22 kit waiting in the wings, would be as close to a do anything handgun as you could get.
Posted By: Nebraska Re: Best all around 45 - 05/12/20
As far as 1911s go, I've never shot anything better than my Kimber Commander CDP II. It was fast and accurate and a joy to carry.....not sure how it would hold up over the long-haul with that aluminum frame but it was an outstanding pistol. I consolidated to only 9mm for a good while and letting that CDP II go was probably a bad idea!

G41 and FNX-45
Posted By: MontanaMan Re: Best all around 45 - 05/12/20
No real "best" all around..........some do some things better than others.

If I had to choose one with considering concealment in a variety of clothes, it would probably be a Commander sized 1911.

If was for pure fighting in a non-concealed type setting & holster, I might want a wonder gun with more magazine capacity than a 1911.

Lots of good guns available.

'All Around' to me means any weather/anywhere/anytime, only one pistol for that I'm familiar with, my Gen4 M21 45 ACP, unspeakable reliability, damn good night sights, hi-cap, plenty accurate enough for 4 inch 25 yard shooting braced off a crossed leg, rain, sleet, snow, mud?, bring it.

230 gold dots at 966
230 FMJ-FP's at 1000
200gr Lehigh Penetrators at 1050
185gr Barnes' at 1150

A man could cover a lot of ground with those loads, a couple spare mags riding in a rear pocket makes it all the better.

IWB hard to beat a 220.
The 41 makes a great gun for the truck where space isn't an issue.
Waiting on delivery on a HK45c. V1.
The S&W MP45c is calling me as well.
I've owned and carried 30 and 36. No love lost. just brick's.
I'd like to see what the Turks could pull off in a 45 Canik.
That's an interesting proposition under 400

I've been very happy with my Ruger P90.

A GI 1911 just does not fit my hand all that well. The P90, with the wider grip feels better. A stock 1911 bruised my web. My EDC's are all DA. I carry my P90 with the hammer down.

Carrying around the property?
Shooting at the range?
