I sure wish I would have given 1911s a try years ago....had to make up for lost time and grab 2....

I just don’t know if I can go back to a polymer pistol as these two shoot way better than I’m capable of and that trigger is a thing of beauty.

...glad you have left The Dark Side....plastic has no soul...

What have you decided on for ammo for the Super?

Thanks gentleman.....

RJM- I haven’t made my mind up yet. The only thing I’ve ran through the super thus far is a mag of 130 ball...

What would be your choice of bullet for carry/woods bumming? I see Underwood has a 124g JHP load at 1350, was maybe considering it.

Works of art.

Like I said. I’m no pistolero, but both guns shoot way better than I’m capable of. It’s hard to say what they could do in the hands of a more competent shooter. I shot these at 15 yards fairly rapidly. 230 ball in the 45 and 130 in the super.

The 45 shoots CCI Blazer to the same POA as the 230 hydrashocks I have stuffed in it....

PS. On the super pic I realize the hammer is back with the safety off. But I assure you the gun is empty lol.....

If you are not going to be reloading for it, the GECO available over on GunBroker runs in the 1300s according to users who have actually chronographed it...it is a good full power .38 Super FMJ load.

For carry, I like a bonded bullet like the Speer Gold Dot or the Underwood Xtreme Defender with the 90 grain Lehigh solid copper bullet.

I would not buy the Winchester Silvertip as it is only in the 1200s...the Federal JHP is even slower...not sure why they even bother...it isn't even 9mm+P...

15 yards...NICE group.

People who have never shot a .38 Super from a Commander have no appreciation of the total balance of the gun...lots of power...great accuracy...little recoil...light to carry.

Right Gunner?...he is out there somewhere with his TALO Colt Commander...

When I was using the Super, I usually used a Speer 125 JSP with a stiff load of HS-7, for messing around in the woods. That was at least 30 years ago, and I'm sure there are better powders available now. That Speer bullet was pretty soft, and would expand easily even in 9mm, so there might have been better choices, but it was available and inexpensive.

Mostly, though, I shot cast 125s on top of 5.5gr. Unique. I cast my own (LEE 356-1252R mould), and it was a hummer of a bullet, and again, it was useful in 9mm, too. I can't count how many of those I shot, but it was a bunch. That load was basically a 9mm equivalent load, but shot better in that Super than most of the 9s I've had. I had scads of enjoyment shooting it. I suspect you would, too.
I like ‘em. Very nice. 😊

RJM. I had planned to load for it originally. But there’s enough factory loads out there that I don’t think I’m going to need to. My local shop had several different types of ammo available and Midway has quite a few offerings as well.

Beautiful 1911's there! Enjoy the heck out of them. If it were me, I'd dump the .45 Hydrashok in exchange for some 230 gr. HST or Gold Dots.

Any particular reason? I always thought the hydrashocks were considered a quality load?

My first choice is gold dots, however local shop only had them in 185s.

IMO Hydrashock bullets were always more about marketing and buzzwords than actual performance. They aren't going to bounce off a bad guy and I'd carry them if I couldn't get anything better, but they aren't one of the better choices either. The Recommended HST or Gold Dots are good, as are the Ranger SXT and the Golden Saber.
Congrats! you have a lot of fun in store getting to know those two, I visited my Gunsmith on Wednesday, carried my 38 Super, 1911's and the Super are his favorites.
No flies on a Sooper, they're scads of fun to shoot. Have fun with the new toys.
