Needing help getting a scope that will mount on my Ruger 77/22 lr with no bolt clearance issues. Tried mounting a Nikon pro staff 3-9x40 and the bolt is hitting the rear objective. Please help!

You might try some taller rings, probably they are cheaper than another scope. If that doesn't appeal to you, you might look seriously for a Burris Droptine Rimfire, or the new Leupold Freedom rimfire scopes (the Leupolds are running $300 now, since everyone has restocked after Covid).. You didn't mention a budget, but if money is tight, the Simmons 22Mag will get you by for a couple of years. I use all three, and have had good service out of all of them.

Good advice on going to higher rings .

I do doubt the Burris Droptine rear ocular bell really going to be any smaller than the Nikon he already has.

The absolute BAIN of current manbun generation hunting scope design is the bloated weights and dimensions. The ocular bells are so large on almost all of them that it is impossible to mount them low on any 90 degree bolt uplife rifle.

Txvarmhuntr78: I have a bunch of now discontinued Weaver V-16's (4 to 16 power variables with adjustable objectives) on my various Ruger 77 rimfires.
I absolutely love these scopes for small game and Varmint Hunting. I am sure I am using the standard rings (medium) on my Ruger 77's with these Weaver scopes.
Indeed a new set of rings will solve your clearance problem if you want to stick with that scope.
Best of luck to you.

Try the Ruger 90270 Scope Mount Rings (medium height).

yep, my prostaff rimfire did the same thing on my 77/22 with ruger medium rings. It was barely hitting though. Either replace the scope or rings. That was the worst thing about those nikons was those huge bells.

Yeah, the older Nikon's were much better as far as shape, size and aesthetics.. Still had good glass too. Definitely good enough for a 22lr or wmr... I'd ditch the cheap azzed prostaff and find an old Nikon or Bushnell elite to throw on it..

What number Ruger rings are currently on the gun? On the back of the base is a circular indentation with a number in it.

The old standard Leupold 3-9 in Vari-X IIc and it’s newer iterations with the same body dimensions should fit with the standard rings included from the factory. My shooting buddies and I have at least 5 of these rifles configured with these scopes and, while you can make the bolt hit the bell, it doesn’t seem to do so under normal operation. They are all the standard, non-AO, models and look right at home on these rifles. Several of us have had the parallax adjusted to 75-100 yards, depending on chambering, but it’s not absolutely necessary.

I would go with Leupold 3x9x33 EFR. They do have A.O. I believe they are the best rimfire scope for your money. Buy once and cry once. You will not be disappointed in it. Used to be bought for $350.00 brand new. They are sky high now. Good shooting

I have Redfield Revolutions on both of my 77/22s with #4 rings. It's close on the ocular clearance, but adequate.

I'm running a Droptine 3-9X40 on my 77/22. I'll try to check the ring height later and will post up.

I have a Droptine on my 77/22. I did use higher rings so the bell would clear. It looks like the bolt handle would have cleared the ocular with medium rings.

My rings appear to be #4.

Ruger supplied the medium height 4K .937" HGT SAT rings with their 77/22 rifles. Mine came with a stainless set that I have no use for. I actually ordered their low stainless set and I have those mounted with a Leupold VX-2 3-9x33 EFR Rim-Fire scope on my 77/22 RSI and the bolt clears just fine. There is another Leupold 2-7x28 Rim-Fire on my 61 and that would mount up well too. Leupold scopes must have lots small diameter ocular lenses.

I have a 3-9 Nikon Prostaff Rimfire scope in Ruger #5 rings on one of my 77/22 rifles. It has plenty of bolt clearance without feeling excessively high. I've had a tough time getting a scope to work with Ruger low rings (an old Nikon 2-7 did work with the low rings) but the medium rings have worked well with the Leupold scopes that I've tried. I like the Prostaff on my rifle; if you like your scope, I'd suggest you go with the #5 rings.

I had an RSI, but sold it to buy my 10/22 CSC. The CSC is a slightly better shooter, but that RSI sure was pretty, and handy. I had the trigger humming pretty good too.

Can’t have ‘em all, at the same time anyway.

M77/17hmr syn stock blued.. I'd guess they are med height rings that came with the rifle new. An old straight 6x Burris Fullfield scope. I've got 5 of those scopes so I guess I am very bias towards them, the rest are duplex x hairs , this one has superfine x hairs with a dot it works very well indeed on the game and the ranges the 17 hmr are suitable for. Bolt handle clearance is adequate but not by much. Mb
