I have zero experience with cans but have recently been thinking about putting one on at least one of my .22 mags.

What are the pros and cons?
Any suggested brands?
Best barrel length?

I tried doing a search, but am coming up with nothing.

Thanks

Barrel length of 16-18". Dead Air Mask works well. Just make sure you get suppressor rated for rimfire magnums. HOWEVER, best to get one that will work on .223 or .308 as you get more versatility that way..

Pros - nice and quiet.
Negatives - $200 for dang fee.

Thanks, something I could put on my Kimber .223 would be a bonus.

And necessarily heavier than a can like the Mask which is rated up to 5.7x28, so 22mag is no problem.

Once you get a suppressor, you will not stop at one.

They should be on everything and the fees and wait time is ridiculous.

I agree. At minimum, a rimfire can and a .30cal can.
Mine is a sparrow and harvester. I’d say that’s about as minimalist as you should go.

If you're going to use it for hunting, you might consider the little Bowers "Bitty".
I have one on a 5.7 Ruger pistol and one on a 17HMR bolt gun. On the 17HMR it knocks just enough off to make it shootable without hearing protection, yet doesn't add a pile of length or weight to the barrel.

I used my Sparrow on 22 LR sub-sonic to my FN 5.7x28 pistol.....really on a 22 LR bolt rifle it finds the most use and is very quiet....working the bolt is louder....
Remember if you keep a bullet below the sound barrier there will be no "crack'.....go over even a couple feet per second it will "crack"....

"suppresser" is nothing more than a "muffler"......just made to lower the sound.....

Teeder - where are you at in PA? I use a Sparrow on multiple rimfire rifles - including 22LR, 22WMR, and 17HMR.

If you’re local, maybe we could meet up and do some shootin.

Picking up a mask this week. Have a .22r Steyr zephyr I’m looking forward to trying it on. Will let you know how it does.

Quoted for truth.
I'm up to 5 and am looking at a big bore can now.

OSU Sig,

I can tell you from experience, You're just getting started.

Teeder,

You need as a minimum a rimfire can and a centerfire rifle can. Really feel you need two rimfire cans. Personally, except for PCC's I don't see the point of a can on a centerfire pistol, adds too much length, YMMV.

Rimfire, I'd pick up a dead air mask. It is one of the few cans that is purported to be 'Quiet' with a rimfire pistol. Mine certainly is, my other rimfire cans not so much.

Centerfire, I can not keep track of them, hopefully you can try one at a shop or a shoot. I've got a couple of thunderbeasts, but am going to a shoot some shop is putting on to find a can for my 5.56.

A can on any supersonic round (22 Magnum for instance) will not suppress the supersonic crack. How quiet it will seem to your ears will, besides the can, be determined by the environment that you shoot it in... in an open field it will be extremely quiet, in a gully or forest where the sound will reflect off of the canyon walls or off of trees it will be much more noticeable.

People bitch about how expensive cans are, or/and the $200 tax==> Price hearing aids and you'll see that they are a bargain. And at some point you'll be needing hearing aids if you shoot much in the field.

I cut a Ruger 22 WMR from 22" to 16.5"...chronograph showed zero velocity loss. Just not much powder in that little case.

Any of the newer and larger rimfire cans will work. Avoid the older and smaller designs which can be pretty loud on the magnum rimfires.

What also works extremely well is any 9mm or 45 acp pistol can with 1/2x28 fixed barrel adaptor (if you happen to have a pistol can).

As Jerry mentioned I also have found little use for my centerfire pistol cans...until it recently occurred to me I could use them on rimfire magnums.
