I don't shoot much rimfire, so please bear with me here. This has to be a basic question.

I took my Marlin 2000T to the range today to sight in the scope I just bought for it. I was using Rem hi-speed and it seemed to be a lot dirtier than I remember a rimfire getting. Again, it's been several years since I've shot a rimfire.

So what's the cleanest brand of 22 ammo? I've heard good things about Wolf ultra match and intend to get a brick as soon as I can find some - is it a clean-shooting ammo? SW

Nebraska, You can find Wolf .22 ammo at natchezss.com at a good price.
My experience with many different brands and grades of .22LR ammo tells me that the higher grades of Eley are the cleanest. The old(no longer made) Federal UM1B load is very clean. SK/Lapua/Wolf is very clean and consistent. But you asked for the cleanest and that is Eley.
If you buy some of the good stuff, give the barrel of your rifle a thorough cleaning first. When you get to the range, shoot 10-15 rounds getting your sight-in close to where you want it and only then start shooting serious groups. This will ensure that the lands and grooves are well and evenly coated with the new ammo's lube which will give your rifle it's best chance of shooting to it's ability. RS

Thanks for the tips! It felt odd to return from the range without a tingling sensation in my shoulder, too! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> - I shoot lotsa 444, 45-70, 303 Sav and 6.5 X 52. SW
