Just wanted some opinions and pictures if possible of your set up.I own a nice 1416 but have a strong desire for a 54 action.Any reason to go with one or the other for squirrel hunting and informal targets.

I know I don't "need" a 54 action for hunting but I WANT one.I would really like to know what scope you are using on it for squirrels and small game.

In that case does it really matter what "we" think?? wink smile

I know the disease all too well! It's in your mind and you won't be happy until that itch is scratched!

Good Luck

No,it doesn't matter one whit what you think, but I need pictures man,I need pictures!! I also need different scope choices to obsess over.Don't you understand anything!

I actually had the same symptoms a couple years ago.It went away but it's back again worse than ever.I fear there is only one cure.
Sorry ... my only Annie is a Weatherby XXII and its a 64 action. BUT it does wear Leupold EFR Rimfire scope.
I bet it's a nice one in a Weatherby stock.

I got lucky with a nice tiger stripe stock on my 1416.I do hate to think of paying 2K for a 54 action with a stock that looks like it was painted brown.

Pick a CZ or Cooper and give up a little.

Pick an Annie and give up nothing
I like it smile
I have a 1712 Anschutz that I think highly off. Most of my 22LR have a Leupold 6.5x20 EFR w/ Leupold 1/2 min. dot on them. The 1712 has a black McMillian stock. You can pretty much do what ever you like with this combo. I use it mainly for silhouette shooting. Hence the high see-thru rings for keeping the head erect.

I have a Savage/Anschutz 54 Sporter that I bought maybe 15 years ago. I paid what I thought was a lot of money for it. I think around 850.00. It was/is in beautiful condition with real pretty wood. I have a Leupold EFR 3-9 rimfire scope on it that I bought right after I got the rifle.

I have NEVER regretted buying the rifle, and it will be the last rifle I would ever get rid of. If I miss a squirrel (or whatever I am aiming at), I immediately freak out because the rifle is truly a precision surgical instrument. Did I mention pride of ownership?
I feel the same way about my 1416 which is a 64 action.I gave $600 for it about 10 years ago.The 54 action guns were about $1000 back then.Price has about doubled for both now.

I have plenty of 22's but with my kids showing a lot of interest in shooting and hunting I would love to have a 54 action to hand down as well.

You never miss because it's your fault??
This one gets the most use, ridiculously accurate and dependable. I complained about the weight when I bought it but it just plain shoots. My main pine squirrel rig, and crow, and coon, and...

Also have a like new 1422 Classic but it's too perfect to take out in the woods, bench duty only. The 54 action is superior to every other rimfire I have had the pleasure to own.

I am fortunate to have both a 1710HB and a 1712 FWT. I've only hunted steel silouettes with mine, but they have proven to be match winners. I had a 64MS that I gifted to my hunting partner and it is a real shooter as well, but the 54 actions, at least my two, are super nice and a step up. Almost unbelievably accurate with any decent ammo....I've had a Cooper which was a really nice rifle and shot well, and I also had a Jap repro Winnie model 52, which also shot well, but there is no drama associated with the Annies. They just shoot....
Cool
If you guys were buying a new one would you get the 1712 with roll over cheek or a 1710 with rollover or straight classic stock?

I like montee carlos' so I'd go / will go 1712
I would buy the Classic. I hate the look of the monte carlo and I have yet to have any trouble scoping a classic stock rifle. I doubt you would need the high roll over cheek piece unless you were using a 50mm objective scope.

I appreciate that and have thought along thoes lines but I do kind of like the roll over look.My main concern though is that I bury my cheek on most rifles and like a high comb or very low mounted small objective scopes on most rifles.

I own several 36mm objective scopes and only one 40mm on a Sako 75 Finnlight, which has a fairly high cheek piece.I don't like higher mounted scopes because I hate for my cheek to barely touch the stock.

I don't know without handling them if the higher cheek stock is just right or too high.I will likely mount a VX2 4-12X40AO

Is there any difference in the two actions other than single stage trigger on the 1710, VS slightly shorter barrel and two stage trigger on the 1712?
The safety is different, at least on the new ones. I think I read once tha the barrel weight & profile is different also. I have 4 of those Leupold scopes, except they are the earlier Vari-X IIc version in 4-12X40. Just about perfect for varmint guns, rimfire or otherwise. Great choice!

Here are some pictures of my Anschutz Model 54 Sporter. This is my favorite squirrel rifle. I have a Leupold 3x9 Compact with adjustable objective on it. I'm not sure, but I don't think they make this scope anymore with the adjustable objective. Also, I sent this scope back to Leupold and had them put in a fine .22 rimfire reticle in it. Really nice. Deadly on squirrels. [Linked Image][Linked Image][Linked Image]
I have two of the 1710HB's and they're fantasic shooting rifles.
I have a 1422 with the monte carlo stock. I like the cheek position but prefer the lines of a classic stock. The fore end of the monte carlo Anschutz stock is a little flimsy for my taste. This said, I am about to get another one back that I sold many years ago. I will probably keep that one and trade the other 1422 for a classic stocked 54 sporter gun. Never hurts to have all of your bases covered smile
