I am trying to find a Remington 581 or 582 to replace my 581 that I foolishly sold a few years ago. I can't find a 581 but I did find the tube fed 582 version. Does anyone know if the accuracy is the same as the 581. I could see how it would be hard to bed the tube in the action.

I'd keep watching. Love the 581.

I have had multiple 580, 581, 582 and 541T and S's over the years...i have made head shots on sparrows with all of them..
pick your poison..i like the 582's for the field and the 541's when i want to show off...currently own none and am happy with my ruger 77/22 mainly because of the aesthetics and detachable clip..
Posted By: rem141r Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 02/05/14
i've had both and they were equally accurate. i liked the 582 better because it held more rounds. the mag seating on the 581 was kind of sloppy too but that may have been that gun. i bought them for my boys when they started hunting and they liked my 77/22 better and so did i so i ended up getting 2 more 77/22's and sold the rems.

one thing about the rems, they liked the cheap bulk ammo. my rugers like the CCI.

I have a Remington 582 and also have a CZ 452. I use the 582 more than the 452. accuracy is about on par with the both of them. Load the 582 and hunt almost all day . Have the 5 and 10 round magazines for the 452, but for me the 10 round extends to far out of the bottom of the rifle. I have never miss placed the tube on the 582, but have had to hunt for the 452 magazines a few times.

gotcha. Does anyone make a good rimfire scope that has a fine reticle and a few multiple aiming points that would make hits on a squirrel easier out to say 75 yards.
Posted By: JSH Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 02/06/14
Buy the 582 if it is a good price. A 582 has just as much accuracy potential as a 581. Keep your eyes open for a 581 and buy that too when it comes along. Great rifles in my experience.
A 582 was my first rifle at age 7 and I still own it today-wouldn't think of getting rid of it. 10 shots at 25 yards into one ragged hole with the only change being a slightly lighter trigger spring. Remington doesn't always impress me but they hit it out of the park with these rifles.

230 for the gun with the beat up scope seems a bit high to me. what do you think?

They don't make 582's (or 581's) any more.
Posted By: 79inpa Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 02/06/14
picked the gun up today. Seems okay however the trigger is too heavy and the bedding suck. Gunsmith has it right now.
Posted By: gemby58 Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 02/06/14
Picked up 2 581's about a month ago for $200. Was going to sell one and keep the other one for free but after shooting them both to see which shot better I couldn't sell either one. Bug holes at 50 yards. I have all the 580, 541 series rifles including the smooth bore with blue rocks and thrower from Remington. I now have 5 581's and a hard to find youth model 581. These rifle are some of the best shooting 22's around
Don't know if this has changed but it was hard (year plus ago) to find 581 5 shot magazines. Not fond of how they protrude from the stock either.

This has been our experience as well.
Posted By: Shotgun12 Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 02/07/14
Yes, they are hard to find for sure, and if you do find one, it'll cost you a pretty penny. Reason being .... in my experience as well as many others, the 10rd mags are plain junk, but the 5 rounders work.
Others can tell you the same thing, unless they got lucky and found a rare 10 that works right.
I own a 581, and have used both the 5's and 10's, and trust me .... you don't want the 10rd mags.
Would have been nice if these mags would have been made of steel instead of plastic.
BTW, the triggers on these can be modified fairly easily, either by yourself or a smith, for a reasonable price.
You'll end up having a lighter trigger that can be adjusted down to below 16oz (if you want), and still be as crisp as ever, and will also remain reliable.
There are also a few simple things you can do yourself to improve its accuracy .... if need be.

I have a 581 I'd trade for a 582. Mine is a tack driver but I prefer the tube feed.

I have heard that some outfit is making a replacement mag for 581's out of steel.

Brownells has steel mags for the 500 series rifles

There was talk of it on several Rimfire forums, but I don't think it ever panned out. Mags for a Winchester 77 will also work in 581's.

79inpa: My local pawn/sport shop here in Dillon, Montana has a very nice Remington Model 581 in 22 L.R. for sale.
The Rifle is in the store on consignment and is "asking" priced at $200.00 with one magazine and a scope mounted on it.
When the scope was mounted the rear sight was removed and is not with the Rifle now - I am not sure if the owner/consignee has that sight or not.
Other than that the Rifle is all original and unmodified.
The Rifle is in very good condition - I would rate the bluing at 97% and the wood at 95%+!
The barrel has been inspected by me and has no bulges and is VERY bright inside.
I am trying to remember the brand and power of scope but I can't - I do recall that I was not particularly impressed with the scope and its value.
If you are interested the phone number for the shop is 406-683-9844 - they are open Tuesday through Saturday 9:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. (M.S.T.).
Please contact me if you have any questions and I will re-visit the shop and try to ascertain what ever you may be interested in.
I am/was personally interested in the Rifle as a possible gift for one of my grandsons - what is holding me back is that this Rifle is definitely adult sized and the stock would need to be adjusted for said VarmintGrandKid.
I have no experiences with the Remington 582.
Best of luck in your search.

I have a 581 and a 581-s and would buy more if I could find them in good shape for $200.00 or less. Great shooting rifles! I had Voelker work over one trigger and wanted him do the other, but he's no longer doing them.

Great Waputi, nylon 11(bolt action clip feed) nylon 77 (semi auto clip feed) use the same mag as the 581 or I should say the 581 uses the same mag as the 2 nylons because they pre date the 581/541 by many years. A Winchester 77 has a steel mag that works only in Winchester Model 77's period. Magnum Man

Bought a 580 for $200 on a whim 2 years ago. Someone had gone to great lengths on this rifle. Beautiful piece of wood, shortened and re crowned the barrel and hung a decent 2x scope on it.
Almost looked as if it was custom made into a youth rifle or as a present for a younger or small statured person.

and does it shoot ? 1 ragged hole at 50....

Gemby58: Thanks for the interest - I will contact the owner of the store and see if the consignee would like to add one of your sights to his Rifle?
Thanks again.

Even though the ad says "all Rem series 500 rifles" it is wrong.
The magazine they are selling is for the early 500 series rifles which takes a completely different magazine from the 581.

No one makes a 5 round magazine for a Remington 581, not even Remington anymore only 10 rounders, the one Brownells sell won't fit the 581

Wasn't aware there was a difference between the older 541/581 magazines and newer 581's .... or am I misinterpreting something.
What would the differences be?

Posted By: drover Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 02/11/14
To the best of my knowledge and experience the 541, 581, and Rem Nylon 77 all use the same magazines. That would be the plastic one in either 5 or 10 shot but they do not use the same magazine as the earlier 500 series rifles made by Remington.

Yes that one will work, but there junk, plain and simple. You could get lucky and get a good one, but you would stand a better chance of winning the power ball lottery then getting a good one. I still have 12 5 rounders yet to go with the 581 rifles I have.
Posted By: Shotgun12 Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 02/11/14
Yep.
As I mentioned above, I've had experience with both 5's and 10's, and never was able to make a 10rd run.
I was just curious about the confusion earlier.

I have a 582 and it's a tack driver. No messing with magazines either. 582! 582! 582!
Posted By: 79inpa Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 03/01/14
I finally got the gun back from my gunsmith. He says that the trigger is non adjustable so he just cleaned it and put it back together. Also the movement on the barrel that I thought was from improper bedding is actually just the magazine tube moving around.

At the range I fired some cardboard box Winchester powerpoints, Remington thunderbolts, and cci mini mags at the 50 yard line. Groups from the thunderbolts averaged around an inch while the other two types of ammo ran about the same with groups a bit under the half inch mark.

next up the pmc zapper and cci green tag that worked so well out of my last 581
Posted By: LeonHitchcox Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 03/01/14
When I bought my 581L in the early 1980s, my gunsmith did a trigger job and reduced the pull from over 6 pounds to about 2.5 pounds and it is as crisp as breaking glass.
Posted By: 30338 Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 03/01/14
Green tag has shot great in ours. We also had a sub sonic round, thinking it was Eley, that was right around .250 - .3 at 50 yards for 5 shots. They shoot a lot of stuff well, just those two really well so far though.
Posted By: JSH Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 03/01/14
The trigger may be non-adjustable in the traditional sense that you can't turn a screw to bring it down, but a lighter spring does wonders.
Those PMC Zappers were great, wish they were still available. I remember when a local dealer was closing them out for $12/brick. Wish I would have bought them all...(to shoot, not to sell on Gunbroker!).

Posted By: PAndy Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 03/03/14
I have an old 512 which is getting pretty tired but it still works. I get sick of magazine troubles with detachable versions. Tube mags are not cool these days but a 582 would be my choice.
Posted By: 260Remguy Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 03/03/14
For me, the 581s don't carry as well, since the magazine protrudes so far below the bottom of the stock, as the 582s. I have multiples of the 580, 581, and 582 and like them, but would like them a little more if the stocks fit me better. They seem about 7/8th size for me, OK, but not quite right.

always liked the various 500 series guns...grew up with a 514.

some years ago i sold my 581, and regretted it.

last gun show i stumbled into a 582 someone had made into a project gun. Previous owner added a contrasting forend tip & grip cap, refinished the whole gun, jeweled the bolt, and added checkering at the wrist. they did a pretty fair job. i stuck a 2x7 nikon on it, and next season it'll get carried to the woods for squirrels.

Still have part of a brick of Zappers. Not particularly accurate in most of my rifles, but they pack a bite and a bark. They are even louder than CCI Velociters in my longer barreled rifles. Even worse in a stock 1022.

As for 581/582 triggers, they are nearly identical in design to M788 centerfire triggers and can be "jiggered" a bit for better performance. Both respond well to some judicious honing, lubing and spring replacement, if one knows what they're doing?

Just finished redoing the trigger on a 582 barreled action I picked up last year fer cheap. Works fine now, didn't work at all when I got it, for various reasons. Someone had buggered the trigger internals. What I need now, is a stock for it.

I prefer the 581 because it does have a detachable magazine. Have both original 5 and 10 rounders, no issues with either.
Posted By: wink_man Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 03/03/14
Natchez also has 10 round magazines for the 541/581.

Natchez 541/581 Magazine

I have no experience with 10 round Magazine on my 581, but I'm still using the original 5 shot clip that came with the rifle and I have a new OEM 5 shot magazine for it also. When I first bought the gun new in the early 70's, I was told to buy a spare clip because they were plastic, so I did, but have never had an issue with the original one.
Posted By: 260Remguy Re: remington 581 vs. 582 - 03/03/14
I've owned a few of the 510/511/512/513 series, but I grew up in a home that was primarily Browning, Colt, Savage, S&W, and Winchester. I have always found the 51x, 58x, and 59x series to be good shooters, even with the simple triggers on the 51x series.

I have a 581 that I got for Christmas in 1967 ($44.95). The original mag still works, but balks once in a while, possibly from a weak spring. I did pick up a replacement years ago that now gets used most of the time. Since I mostly shoot my CZ these days, it should last forever ( at least MY forever). I would like to find the single-shot adapter some day. In general, tube-feed guns are supposed to give more trouble as they age, but I never had one that long.

I've often thought about replacing that plastic thing on the barrel with something more seemly, but never figured out anything that would be easy enough for my meager skills and equipment. Very long ago I did replace the front sight with a Williams Shorty ramp and bead, and a Redfield peep that attaches to the receiver grooves.

I suggest getting some action-proving rounds, and buy the first one you find that works well. Or a 580, if you can find it.

For those inclined, this 788 modification is supposed to work on the 58X Remington's.
