Hi all,

My son and I were just at a gunshot where he made a deal on an FN .22 single shot. It looks to be refinished. When we got out on the way home I took a closer look at it and the standings say .22 L on the side. I checked a .22 LR round in it and it does fit, but I'm wondering if there are issues firing them in these guns?

Hoping someone didn't take advantage of an 11 year old. I was trying to teach him how to make a deal and negotiate. Appreciate any info on this gun. Thanks.

The 22 long and long rifle use the same case, but the 22 long uses a shorter 29 gr bullet vs. the 40 gr of the long rifle.

As I recall my late fathers Remington #4 rolling block is stamped 22 long, but the only ammo we've ever fired through it has been 22 lr, and we've run quite a few rounds through it over the years.

I won't be so bold as to claim every rifle stamped 22 long will safely fire 22 lr, but in the majority of cases they will.

One of the lessons to learn when negotiating is that no matter how excited you are, thoroughly look over the item. I'm sure he'll enjoy his rifle for a long time.

Thanks 458 Lott. I took a shot with it using a .22 LR and it seemed to shoot and extract just fine.

I agree on inspecting what you are looking to buy thoroughly prior to purchasing. That's hard to do when you are eleven and excited about buying your first rifle!

Just look at that smile...

A couple of the rifle. It's a pretty neat little gun and different from all the chipmunk/rascal/mini-bolts out there. He was determined to have a wood stock.

Very good wood compared with what is the norm now. Nice Schnabel as well. Have to teach him what it is for.

I love the look of that rifle. Hope the kid has many years of enjoyment with it.

Thanks for the pic! Good lookin' boy there, and rifle!

Sure brings back memories when my 3 Sons were eatin' me out of house-and-home and shooting 22's!

Handsome rifle, and the boy resembles my grandson, so no problem there!

Unless I had good info to the contrary, I'd stick to standard velocity. CCI Quiet .22s might work well too.

Thanks guys. Took the rifle out last weekend and it shot quite well. 1/2" groups at 20 yards using cheap federal bulk ammo. We had a gong set up at 237 yards on the farm so I snapped a freehand shot at it with this .22 just for fun. Be darned if I didn't hit it. Complete fluke as it was a generous hold over with open sites on a calm day.

Also got some "mythbuster" type slo-mo video of shooting through a row of water balloons with it. The bullet pierced 6 balloons before it deflected enough to miss anymore. The .7mm-08 and .30-06 only made it through 4. It was a good opportunity to explain the principles of velocity and fragmentation to an 11 year old.

Nice looking arm and a great looking happy kid there. Keep him at it, and I hope one has a stash of ammo around somewhere.
