What exactly is the difference between a Rem. 581 and a 581-S that I see mentioned once in a while. Nowhere on my 581 can I find an S.
the Remington 581s came with a loading ramp to use the rifle as a single shot they were made out of cheap plastic like the magazines

bolt had a slight bend in it too
Okay thanks for clearing that up.
I can't seem to recall ever wanting to use it as a single shot.
Might come in handy if I was introducing a kid to it or something.
do you have the single shot adapter that came with the rifle, they don't work very well for ejecting the fire case, I make steel magazines for the 581 and have one that is used for single shot like the winchester 52. You have to remove the action from the stock to install the one Remington makes
The 581 was the original designation when they and the 580, 581 ,582 and 541's were discontinued for a few years. When thee 541 t was introduced the 581 was " Reintroduced " as the 581 s with the S/S adapter
