To those of you who shoot the Aguila Super Extra ammo, what can you tell us about it?
Posted By: bowmanh Re: Aguila 22LR ammo - 12/07/18
It works well for me. It's reasonably accurate for HV ammo and I rarely get misfires. It works well in semi-autos like the 10/22 and .22 AR uppers. And the price is pretty reasonable. As with any .22 ammo you need to see how it shoots out of your rifles.

I think that Aguila is plinking ammo, not serious group shooting ammo.

When I did a rim thickness sort of multiple brands of .22 LR ammo, Aguila had the most different rim thicknesses.

Bulk pack FED/REM/WIN never had more than 4 different rim thicknesses and about 90% would be in 1 group, with the remaining +/-10% would be divided between 2 or 3 groups.

Since I don't have any interest in sorting plinking ammo by rim thickness, I just buy whatever brand and style of .22 LR ammo has worked well in specific rifles. As with any rimfire firearm and ammo combination, what works well in 1 may not work as well in a different firearm of the same make and model.

Never shot any of it, hear mostly favorable opinions for a variety of their ammo.

Reason I don't fool with it is simple. I've never been much into plinking. If plinking is the exercise then cheap should prevail I'd think. Aguila is probably competitive in that world, perhaps even better, I dunno.

Only thing that matters to me is precision. Average US production has been hit and miss for me in all of my rimfires. Some works, most doesn't. Got frustrated with this about 20 years back and purchased a quantity of what worked for 2 of the 3 .22s I had at the time. Somewhere along the line about 8-10 years ago I picked up some Wolf MT and it changed my perspective quite a bit. I've dabbled with the Wolf MT and ME, picked up some SK Standard when the Wolf MT went off the market as they are the same thing. ALL of my .22 RF guns like it...problem solved and I am content.

5 shots, hard to top this.

And if a fella is going down this path with a .22 RF placement is the only thing that matters.

I shoot a lot of the Aguila SE-HV, in several rifles, and it shoots quite well for what it is (it isn't Lapua CenterX, for example), but it seems to be equal to, if not better, than CCI MiniMags. It's every bit as reliable as the CCI ammo, too. I've shot a case of the stuff without a single misfire, failure to fire, or hangfire, and that's in four CZ rimfires and two Ruger rifles (and two Ruger pistols and an S&W). I have another case and half in reserve. I like it better than anything else I've tried for the price.

Sure, you can get better results with some of the European ammo, but you can't buy the Eurostuff at $2.50/box, either. In my particular rifles, it outshoots CCI SV, but is shaded a bit by CCI Blazers, of all things. Blazers are pretty darned good ammo for HV, and should not be overlooked, either.
I have not had the stellar results with the SE-SV, but you might be happy with it. I wish I could afford to shoot Lapua all the time, but I can't. I'm pretty happy with the Aguila product. It's smelly, but it shoots.

Bought a few bricks of standard velocity when ammo was short and it has been very good to me.
No duds, hangfires, feeding problems etc and very accurate. Not Eley accurate but if there's a round out of place I know its me.

Aguila Super Extra is in both high velocity and standard velocity. Shot a lot of it around 10 years ago, when it was a bargain. I'd take it over most of the bulk domestic ammo.

Prefer mini mag's in the HV, it's clean and works/functions in about everything. CCI standard velocity is a little more consistent (than aguila) and maybe a smidge more accurate.

But as Dan pointed out Wolf Match Target is much better. The price has gotten a little ridiculous though===> compared to where it was anyway.

With CCI/Speer's one box rebate for every five that you buy and Target Sports price (and free shipping on case plus quantities) for CCI standard velocity... I'll stick with CCI-SV.

YMMV,

Two of three rifles I've used the standard velocity in like it fairly well, but all three like CCI-SV better. It doesn't function well in my Buckmark pistol.

An old lot of their Rifle Match shot very well in a CZ453; .3s-.4s. None of the other types has done better than ok in my current rifles, but the super-fast stuff ought to be great for close-up killing of small vermin, just like Stingers.

Consistency costs, and I don't mind paying $8 a box for the RWS SSHPS my 77/22 RSI prefers for hunting, but I don't practice with it either. Other, cheaper stuff works fine for that. Rimfire ammo is mostly a crapshoot, and the next lot of your pet load may be crap in your gun. That's one reason why I have a pistol too; to burn up the crap.

My $.02.

During the most recent shortage Aguila was relatively more available than American made .22 ammo, so a friend and I bought quite a bit of it. We noticed that our single stack .22 pistols, a S&W Victory and a Buckmark, were having occasional failures to feed. At first we thought it was the gun, especially the then-new S&W, but it turned out that the problem only occurred with the Aguila HV, and only in the single stack mags. It fed fine through the "loose" mag in my Ruger SR22, kind of a semi-double stack. I couldn't find any measured difference in the Aguila, but there seemed to be something about it that caused a few hang ups. Also works fine in the rotary 10/22 mags.

I believe Aguila makes good ammo at a competitive price point, and far better than today's Remington, which isn't saying much.

Like others have posted, there are two very different markets for .22 ammo, cheap plinking ammo and precision match grade ammo. The ammo and those who buy and shoot it have very little in common.

For my money, by far the best cheap .22 ammo, when you can find it, is CCI Blazer.

I've shot about 2 cases of it. High velocity HP's & standard velocity 40 grain. 38 grain HV is 20 - 40 fps faster than 36 CCI mini mag HP, & very dependable for function, with few to no missfires. Surprisingly, it's a poor performer on Jack rabbits, with Mini Mags filling the role there.

My use of the 40 grain standard velocity has left me with the opinion that it will out group or at least group with anything that cost up to 6 or 7 cents(todays prices). Specific rifle preferences will always rule, but a CZ 452V, an Annie 64 & a 10/22T all shine with Aguila SV, requiring Wolf MT or better to out perform.

And...... with some shopping around, I think it can be had for under 3 cents.

I do feel I need to add that all the Aguila I've used & tested was pre-shortage ammo. Hoping here that the current stuff is as good, but I don't know that.

Does Aguila sell a standard velocity short .22? I have a Remington M 6 to shoot it in. I couldn't get the LR to chamber in it so I thought it might be safer in an early rifle to use the short standard velocity. TIA

Several years ago somebody gave me 2 boxes of the SE standard velocity. It shot great in my Shilen barreled custom 10-22. I bought a brick of it and it is still on the shelf. It is marked $13. on the brick. I'll shoot it one day.

I've shot a couple of bricks. The Aguila Super stuff shoots good enough in my various rimfire's. Is it premium stuff, nope, but isn't labeled that. Quite afew decent groups have been fired along with various tree rats taking a tumble, etc. Good stuff to have around in case another shortage happens! Just my 2 cents
