Looking to buy one in the next week or two. Leaning towards the Ruger 10/22 or the Marlin Mo. 60. Which one, or whats better in that price range?
Don’t know anything about the Marlin but it seems the 10/22 has always been regarded as the Gold Standard of 22 LR semi autos
Hard to go wrong with the Ruger. Marlin lovers seem to like those pretty well too.
If you want something just a bit more special, CDNN has nice SS "Target" model 10/22s with a lammy stock and the BX trigger already installed for less than $400, last time I checked.
Are you planning on leaving box stock? If you are a Marlin 60, Remington 597, Savage A22 or even the Rossi 22 semi is likely going to outshoot the Ruger. If you think you may tinker in the future, Ruger is the choice hands down. Nothing else has anything remotely close in aftermarket support. The Rugers aren't terrible for accuracy, but there's a reason so many offer aftermarket barrels, triggers, stocks, etc.
Both are excellent guns the marlin is very accurate and very reliable, tube feed. The Rutgers are also excellent accurate and reliable, 10 shot magazines are very handy. If you want add things the ruger is so well supported you can do almost anything.
I know it’s not what you mentioned, but the S&W mp 15 in .22 is a decent shooting, and fun gun, especially with the 25 rd mag. Can burn a bunch of ammo, fast.
For about $600 you can get a Browning SA-22. Not a good truck gun, however.
Not a good truck gun? At least it don't fling all the empties down the defroster vents......
True, but watch out if you like to cruise in your short-shorts or kilt.
Saw a video about an old BSA that collected the empties inside the receiver so you could dump 'em all at once. No evidence left at the scene.
Had both still got the 10-22. My Model 60 was a little more accurate out of the box but not enough to make much difference for a non target rifle. Hard to beat the basic 10-22 for handling or the rotary magazine for reliability IMO.
I have both, a '73 Marlin 60 "Squirrel Gun" and a 2000ish Ruger 10/22.
The Ruger will outshoot the Marlin, (barely) but I had to dump a pile of money to do it. (Barrel, stock and a trip to Connecticut Precision Chambering for the "Full Tune-Up" package.)
That Marlin was the first gun I ever bought in 1973. It will do 3/4" at 50 yds with CCI SV. Gotta have close to 100,000 rds. thru it.
I vote for an older Marlin. (Pre- Remington)
Marlin 60. I hate loading 10-22 magazines.
And the Rugers won’t outshoot the Marlins unless you do a LOT of work on them.
My Marlin 60 was a great rifle with a bad trigger. I put in a MCARBO trigger kit and saw little improvement. It was accurate, though. I don't like tube-fed rifles, but I did like not having to keep track of magazines.

Just took delivery of mine today. Just finished mounting a VX-Freedom 3-9x40 on it. CameraLandNY had it for $199 with Leupold lightweight aluminum rings for free. Feels like a helluva little rifle. All in for a hair over $600 with the transfer... worth it.
