What types of helmets are you all using ??<P>I have a couple old moto style helmets.. but it seems sometimes they restrict your peripheral vision...<P>I MUST wear a helmet at least when moving from coyote stand to coyote stand... I sometimes will move several miles on roads etc...<P>--Steve

I'm also using my old moto helmet, and notice the same problem. My son's helmet is an "HJC" brand, model CL-5, and peripheral vision is much improved, compared to mine. It also has a couple of small vents with sliding covers, snap-on visor, and is designed for use with the snap-on goggles. It has a textured camoflage finish, so them varmints will never see ya comin'! I couldn't say how it compares to other current models, since we picked this one up kind of on the spur of the moment. It was $95 at a local shop.

Haven't got one yet, still looking. Do you all use the open face type, or the ones with the full chin guard.<P>Phil

Greyghost,<P>We have both types ..... no doubt, the full-face models offer better protection, and so should be recommended, but being a conservative rider (read old & slow), I grab the open-face every time, for comfort.

Ray,<BR>I don't know of anyone who enjoys wearing them (I sure don't.), but we've seen one close friend of the family killed because he wasn't wearing one. The peace of mind is well worth the inconvenience and relatively minor discomfort,imo. LC

Ray, you have stated your postion in the past that you are a horse person and we respect that, but please stop poking at us atv people. I have the open face helmet. it is a atv helmet and they are pricey, but the peace of mind is worth it. you never know when you might hit a low hanging branch on an atv trail or end up rolling it. sometimes in the fall hunting season I wish I had a face plate because the wind really bites when it get close to zero. tom

Pumpgun,<BR>I was just pokeing a little fun at the horseman, not you ATV boys...Lord if I ever got on a ATV I'd want body armour and helmet.<P>Loud Cloud, sorry about your loss..I have lost a few friends over the years from horse accidents and Rodeo but not head injuries, usually crushed chests or horns, and if you feel better with a helmet you certainly should wear one, I choose to wear my hat, I suppose the fact that I have worn it for 66 years helps my confidence, but I have had a couple of licks to the head, but its harder than most so thats my reasoning. Talking to one of the Operating Engineers today, on one of the construction sites. About how I took out my ATV, and damn near flipped it, first time out. He told me, a few years ago, he was riding his son's 3 wheeler. Did the same thing I did, going up over a blind hump. Except instead of going over a 4' washout. He run his front wheel into a deep hole. The bike flipped tossing him over the bars, and came down on his head and shoulder. Broke his shoulder, but he was wearing a full face helmet, protecting his face. Broke the visor, and the mouth protector, but didn't hurt him bad.<P>Phil

I have the new Sportsman helmet: black, camo "Sportsman" stick on both sides, full face. No way I would wear an open-faced helmet. Sure they are more comfortable, but I don't need my ugly mug getting any uglier (in case of a crash).

I do not have an ATV, but I can talk helmets. Riding a 4-cylinder Honda in the right hand lane in 6 lanes of work traffic in Tucson, a german shepherd came barreling from behind a fence and ran full speed into the front wheel of my cycle. Yeah, killed him instantly! A police car was on my left. Noticing him, I had just glanced at my speedometer moments earlier; 40 mph. The cycle and I parted company. The guy behind me stopped (thank God); he said my head hit the pavement first and bounced like a rubber ball. He figured I was a dead man. I ruined (as in shredded) my Levis, denim shirt, ground off the front of my belt buckle, part way through my leather gloves and my boots, and ground off two of the snaps at the top of my face shield. The Bell helmet had an ugly gash ground into the back of it. Me?? I got a bruised hip and was sore a couple of days.
