I'm kinda curious if anybody else has tried to use a atv to "pony" their horses?
The recent heat and humidity here in the midwest, coupled with my acheing knees and general laziness prompted me into trying to pony the horses off my atv.
After a few slow laps around the pasture I was ready to go out and put a few miles on them. It seemed to work very well. Having gaited horses I wanted to keep them at the speed which I thought they worked well in,
but allowing them to whoa, and then flat walk for some distance. I've started them at 5 miles, and at speeds from 6mph to 12 mph. They actually seem to enjoy it!
I start them slowlly, and cool them off of course.
My fat boys are getting back in shape.
Do you think it's a sin against tradition by working the boys this way?
I figured since I don't have a "walker" this might be the next best way short of saddleing up.
Anybody else doing this?
regards,
gunner
Hey, if it works, great. I pony a few head in back of my wagon when I hitch up. SO look at it as an ATV being only a newer version.
As for a sin, I'm only against the ATV"S who ride through your stand at daybreak, knowing your'e there, or go into areas that are prohibited. AS long a sthey are used responsibly, I think thye are great.Sure don't have to feed them all winter
