Anyone used or handled a scabbard (and horn bag unit) from Rawhide Gear?

it might could work. On a dead broke nag, in flat brush/downfall/timberless country......

Yea, I sure wouldn't want it hanging straight down like that

Yeah, that thing is a accident waiting to happen.

That also looks like a good way to imbalance and overload a saddle horse.

Lot's of the same thoughts I had. Wasn't sure if there was something I was missing.

There was/is a forum member making leather rifle scabbards.

He could, if he drug him around behind a saddle horse instead of setting up there on him....

Somehow this photo looks like that scabbard should be taped to the mule's leg to make it a Clint Eastwood fast draw holster.

Don't like how low it holds the rifle, but I like the rifle up front like that. Hate things under my legs. Good looking mule.

I agree. All I've used has been leather for a lever action with no scope running under my left leg (under bend of my knee) butt forward. Even with the slim profile I dislike it under my leg. Started looking at scabbards for a scoped bolt action and knew it would be even thicker. Being clear of my leg is what caught my eye on this one but hanging so low it would hit everything and mounted any higher it would be in the way.

for places that don't have snow, brush/trees or dust......

Ride I had this evening would have been tough on any of the vertical designs. I think they would have been flapping a bit.

The gelding I was riding usually does a couple of crow hops somewhere during a ride then is good. He got serious today. 3 or 4 crow hops, then stopped for a second and I relaxed....then he bunched up and got after it. One of the guys I was riding with said I made it about 12 seconds and the other said 15, felt like 2 minutes. He got me when he started sunfishing one way then the other. ...this was about 3 hours into the ride...and he's a 14 year old horse. Never used one before, but I'm gonna rig a nightlatch tomorrow.

Lord, you got a lot more grit than me wink
Horse did that with me, he'd be somebody else's horse soon.
Had one do that about 25 years ago, had to walk back to the house. It was just another random nag my Dad had traded up.
Told Dad his horse and saddle was somewhere in the bottom,
and I didn't think he wanted me to go get it. Why he asked,
I told him I was going with the 30/06 if I went after it

lol...gritty is actually the word I use to describe that gelding. He'll pin his ears back and go on a cow, dog, goat, another horse, whatever. It's one of the reasons I like him, but he'd not thrown down like that before.

I usually run a rope through my belt (not tied so it can slide free) that I can catch if I leave the saddle in an unplanned manner. As soon as I hit the ground I grabbed it to stop him from running off. He didn't run, stopped in his tracks, turned and stared at me. At least he was breathing hard..... He was great the last 2 hours of the ride and hasn't bucked since.

I rigged a nightlatch the next day but haven't needed it yet.
