What do you folks recommend for a replacement synthetic for a ruger all-weather (old style)? I'm most concerned w/ ability to handle recoil and the need to keep the weight down. I've owned a few 06's before, but w/ full-house 180gr elk loads, this little mother kicks. I would like to keep it as light as possible, as it is my exclusive hiking partner during elk season. THanks.
McMillan..

Other than the obvious McMillan answer, I had one in a Bell and Carlson before. Not a McMillan as far as stiffness is concerned, but not as pricey. Most definitely you would want to glass bed it. Or, get yourself a McSwirley for Christmas ---2MG
Steely, cut it out dammit....I'm weak...
Nothing money can't cure......
Thanks guys.. I've been looking around at McMillans, hs precision, basners, etc.. hard to deal w/ all the choices..
Try the new one from Ruger and if you want, put on a Declerator pad. I did and it works great.
Actually the Pachmayer Decelerator is available for the old Ruger boat paddle stock. I've got one on my 338 and it works just fine. It has a plate that screws to the stock and you should be able to screw the pad onto the plate but I ended up epoxying it on. Hangs over just alittle at the toe. Other wise I've used both B&C and McMillan. Both worked fine. If you are interested it is the model P/N 01736 RUGER M-77 MKII "ALL WEATHER" SYNTHETIC STOCKS WITH LARGE RECESSED RUGER LOGO.
I just noticed those Decelerator pads for the all-weather while leafing through the Midway catalog. Any chance you have a pic of it on your rifle? Thanks
I ordered a McMillan for my Ruger 338Wm. No peer pressure here. "grin"
I would LOVE to get a McMillan on it, but I'm also raising a family and trying to keep my costs down. I picked it up used for $250 because the guy said something was wrong w/ it and it wouldn't shoot worth a hoot. First three rounds I put through it were dang near touching. Found out the other fellow had shot a 243 up until then, and the group problem was flinching. At any rate, I would love to get it in a nice aftermarket stock, but have a hard time spending more on the stock than I did on the rifle to begin with.
If you want to tame the recoil and add a little weight to it without breaking the bank, get a Hogue Overmolded with the full block bedding. The recoil pad is very soft and the stock is heavy enough to knock down some of the recoil. I have one of these on a Winchester M70 300WM. They run just under $200 from Cabelas. Heck I'll even give you a coupon that will take $20 off your purchase making it $179? Heres the link.

Let me know.
Thanks a lot for the offer, I really do appreciate it. But, I just put an order through midway for a decelerator pad for it and I'll try that before I make a stock change. I LOVE how utilitarian this rifle is, not much to worry about while hunting. I have it topped w/ a leu 2-7x that compliments it nicely.
I really like the old style stocks. I have several, including one on my 338. H-S Precision makes a stock for them that will run you around $280. McMillan will run you $430. I understand the money problem, my wife is a student, so I work two jobs to pay for my gun habit. LOL
Steelhead: What's the color mix on that stock?
Medium green/White/Turqouise flame, no percentages.
Does Mickey make a Edge for a 77?

Tanks

I believe no Edge for a 77, per Dick!
Nope

Qhorse, sorry about that I forgot about this post and didn't check back in. Sounds like you you've already made the commitment to try it. I picked up a small 90 sec 2 part epoxy and used it to install the pad to the plate. Just go slow and it's pretty easy to figure out. One thing I would say is have everything ready BEFORE you squeeze out the 2 part epoxy as 90 seconds maybe liberal. Don't ask how I know. Also did a Ruger Lam stock for my son's 300 WM and an R-3 recoil pad at the same time. Epoxy is your friend. Good luck it does make a diference.
