So, I’m not against rattle canning a rifle that’s a wee bit bright on the SS. Problem is I find most paint to go on a little thick. Anyone here a rattle can pro that can suggest a paint that covers well and isn’t too thick?

Krylon is what I usually use. Not sure on thickness.

Krylon works fine.
Thickness is all in the operator. Don't try for final coverage in one coat.

Not a rattle can pro but duplicolor de1634 low gloss black engine paint goes on smooth and somewhat better durability than regular spray paint.It helps to degrease well before painting and bake part in oven to help cure.

I like the Krylon camo black. It closely resembles most matte finish guns. I wanted a short 1187 barrel and could only find one in camo. Painted it and you couldn't tell compared to the receiver.

I’ve used the krylon camo colors as well.

Craft stores typically sell webbing paint also for some texture and visual effect.

Make sure to do a lot of clear coat if you use the webbing to keep it from peeling off.

I use Stone Textured Valspar, then Krylon and black web, with a layer of clear matte Alumahyde II over. Pretty durable.

Alumahyde II on the barrel of the rifle on top. Didn't see the need to do the action.
Shilen pre-fit was very shiny. I did use several coats, it's on pretty thick.

There are some GOOD old threads about rattle-can stock painting projects, with lots of technique explanation, tips and hints.

Another vote for Krylon Camo colors. I have some of the Rustoleum Multi Color textured paint on hand. Did a test piece with it. Excellent grip. However, have not done an entire stock with it, yet. Thinking of doing a base coat with a couple flavors of the Rustoleum texture paint. And then add detail / accent with light coats of Krylon camo.

Just dont use acrylic based paint over oil based paint, and definitely dont do an acrylic clear over oil based. It may last for a little while, but not optimal.

That being said, you can use an acrylic base and put oil base on top of it, just not the other way around.

Try to stay with in the same lines, if you use krylon, use all krylon products, etc. I like krylon flat clear. Been using it on my handmade decoys for years.

Ace hardware carries the black krylon marble spray online and will ship to store for free within a few days. Bout as cheap as you will find it.

Hobby Lobby usually carries the gold krylon marble spray. I have yet to see any other colors of it locally.

I use Rustoleum or Krylon camo.
Haven't seen the old Hunters Specialty stuff for ages.
Topcoat is Painter's Choice matte clear.
Stinky stuff, does add some sheen back but isn't glossy.

Alas, I'm tired of camo and would prefer flat black.

Webbing colors at local hobby stores are white, gold, silver or black.
Montana Cans (german?) offers other colors and is sold by artists shops online and maybe in some other chain stores.
I have not used those yet.

My old tiger stripe 700 stock is hanging in the garage.
Went with an HS in grey web. Its not camo, and not boring.......just the right touch of "different" IMHO.

I might do a stock black w red webbing. That's my extent of painting from now on.

Dunno what the hell was used on the M77MKII all weather I bought (full camo).
Was a bear to get off that stock. Hard to see but some staining.

This one was quick n dirty, came out OK. 2 hrs and a 6 pack

I like Krylon Fusion over a degreased stock, followed by many light coats of Brownells AH-II clear. As the AH-II is epoxy-based, it needs to dry for a couple of weeks before it loses the smell and stops being tacky to the touch. The stuff sure cures hard though, and doesn't add a huge amount of shine.
