I was in a local sporting goods shop today just to see what he had. As expected not much ammo on the shelves.

One thing that intrigued me was 4 boxes of Winchester Supreme 140 grain failsafe in 280 Rem.

I already have some 280 ammo and probably don't need anything more than soft points for shooting here in PA but I keep thinking I should go back and get it.

Is it worth $44 a box?

If your gun will like them? Absolutely.

Never shot them out of my .280 so I'm not sure. Sometimes I reload sometimes I buy factory. I think the last factory stuff I got for the .280 was like $35 a box for fusions. I'm thinking I might go back and get all 4 boxes. If the gun likes it I'll use it sparily if not I'll sell what's left.

Accuracy can be hit or miss with the bullets, they were never particularly accurate in any .280 I owned..but they are very good bullets.

I shot the Failsafe factory loads in a 338 Winchester and 375 H&H and don’t recall displeasing accuracy.
I also shot the 270 Winchester, 140 grain factory loads in my son’s M70 Classic stainless featherweight. That rifle grouped them Extremely well.
If I had a rifle for those 280’s at that price, I would buy them in a heartbeat.

You'll be lucky if they are still there. In this day and age buy the ammo and have a gun rebarreled for it is faster than finding ammo at a reasonable price. Mb

Years ago I had a 7-08 and it loved the Win 140 failsafe ammo. It shot it so well that I never bothered reloading for that gun. If I am remembering correctly, it was about $30 a box and that was 20 years ago.

They were my go to for a while back in the late 90s. I had good accuracy but I did find them to be a very hard bullet. I wouldn’t expect them to open much on a deer’s ribs.

Its the sporting goods store near my parents house. Same place I bought my first rifle when I was 16. I'd say those 4 boxes of ammo have probably been there for close to 20 years. I probably will go there Monday and buy it. If its gone its gone I have other .280 ammo

Exactly why I quite using Failsafes for deer in my 7mm-08. Exit holes on double lung shots showed little if any expansion. Two deer three shots each in the right place. That was enough for me to go back to Win power points.

One great bullet that Nosler & Winchester developed together, yes heck of a stout bullet that suffered from low BC , but they performed great breaking big bones and shoulder blades, it out performed the Partition which says a lot!, yes to hard for deer but it was meant to break big bones and drive deep , I’ve still got a magazine write up on them when the Winchester WSM’s came out they shot them in Australian buffaloes, useing the 270 WSM,7WSM& 300WSM ‘s in Browning & Winchester bolt rifles . Performance was 2nd to none , great write up with pictures .
