If you had a spare 30-06 or .280 lying around, what would you let JES change it into? (9.3x62 is off the table... already working on one.)
338-06 plays well with lesser rounds. I pair mine with a 280.
I also have the 9.3x62 you mentioned.
Les
I would say his bread and butter....35 Whelen 👍👍
Thanks, Tom
.400 Whelen. The most power you can pack into that bolt face.
With the 400 make sure you have a 'smith who knows what he's doing. It uses a .458 measure on the neck diameter. Be Well, RZ.
Wait a few days and see if the boredom passes.

I'd say 35 Whelen or 375 Whelen, but if you already have a 9.3x62 in the works, I'd go with 338-06.
And don't rebore a good 280 to make it. Use the 30-06, or find a 270 somewhere.
338-06. I have a JES rebored 9.3x62. Looking at doing a 338-0) just for giggles. Tho I have looked long and hard at the 400 Whelen. But die availability and $$& is why I’m looking at 338-06. YMMV
338- 06. I’d like to have one.
I don't know, I had two nice Whelen rifles and have a nice .338-06. I liked all of them, but I find I reach for my .223, 6mm CM, and .270 to do most of my hunting and shooting. These days I'd probably just sell a rifle I wasn't interested in anymore.
Would suggest the .338-06.
Have the 9.3x62mm as well, so the A-Square would give you a longer range, high SD/BC medium bore.

For those of you that have had jes rebore a 30-06 to 35 whelen, ball park what does it cost?
This might be something I’ll be doing in the future!
Ok then,,,,,,, you'll need to have a Budget of $250-$300.00 +/-....... get-er-done......

$250 plus shipping to Oregon. Return shipping included in the price.

Piece of cake man.
Quality cartridge has 400 Whelen brass in stock
4D has the 'Petrov' reamer for rent, 50 bucks, send that to JES and see if he can bore for .410.411" bullets.
CH4D may have 400 Whelen dies in stock.
OP, go 400 Whelen, or if you want to kick some tail out to 400 yards, the 35 Whelen will boot 250gr Partitions 2700 fps.
Awesome!! You guys ship the whole rifle or just barreled action?

The gun industry would crater if we listened to this nugget of balanced reason.
I’ve had great luck with the 338-06 & 225gr Hornady or 185gr TTSX. Also can take a 250gr Partition over 2500 if you need it. Still tho the 30-06 is pretty great with a 180gr @ 2750.
I understand gun loonyism and have been well afflicted with the same for years, although it seems to be subsiding a bit later in life.
Saying that ..... A 338-06 won't do much more than what a good 30-06 will do. It's not much of an upgrade to a heavier bore.
Seriously, once you’re at the 30-06 level, nothing is doing much more. It’s just about being different. A 338-06 won’t be doing less! 338 bullets don’t make smaller holes in critters. More importantly, a 338-06 round is the best looking. Something about the proportions is just right.
Interesting so many 338-06 votes. Decided to leave the rifle alone. For now.......
I have a new drinking game.
Every time someone mentions having JES rebore a rifle, I take a shot of Jack.
You guys owe me for liver damage.
Haha if you really want cirrhosis take a shot every time someone complains about ammo prices.

I’d like to do a 400 one of these days when I find the right donor.

I’ve never had one but I’ve got an old 7600 in 270 Win that’d make a great place to monkey with one.

It's a hell of a cartridge buddy, 400 grains at 2255 fps is a hell of a bang for the buck power factor on the '06 sized case, with either Woodleigh soft or solid any game animal anywhere in the world could be handily taken, it has to near the very definition of efficiency.

That would be a good plan for a 270. It’s more about what just seems right to an individual, but I think a 180 Partition from a 30-06 or the 210 Partition from a 338-06 are degrees of perfection in a big game rifle.

Yeah, the 210 PT has been real good to me as well.
Still looking for someone who can neck down my 280 barrel to 270!

Oh, but the 280 is way more better! 😄
Guess you could put a barrel liner in it. 😉😆

Agree. Even JOC saw the light near the end of his life... 😁
I totally get how the 280 is mathematically and theoretically better than the 270.
I bought one!
In reality the only thing I can tell that the 280 does better is cost 50% more per box of ammo.
Sorry, I know that is hearsay to some and I won't argue.
Perhaps when my loading bench is up and running I'll be able to "load the difference".
Till then, who wants a gen 1 LH Browning stainless stalker in 280?
