Pretty sure I'm good to go, but wanted to check with some guys who shoot them.

I've got a stainless 700 DBM that's getting a new barrel. It's going to be a vanilla 280 Rem, shooting 160 SGK and 162 ELDX(if I can find them).

I got a great deal on a #3 SS Shilen blank, with a 1-9 twist. I know that 8 would probably be preferred, but I want to know if any of you shoot this combo with a 1-9, and how it does.

As far as elevation, I'm at sea level in Virginia.

Thanks!

You will be fine with 1:9. Will be a great rig for ya

I put a 1:9" JC Custom bbl on mine. I'm quite happy with it as is.

I have a 9 twist on my 28 Nosler and it stabilizes 180 vlds.

Any reason NOT to go 8 if starting from scratch?

Not in my book. 7.5/8’s for anything 7mm for me.

8 would be an excellent choice IMHO

If I was ordering a bbl from Shilen, I would have gone with an 8. But, I got my blank for half price, from a guy who abandoned his project.

Sounds like the 1-9 will work perfectly. Still trying to decide 22, or 24 inches. Most likely, 24.

Yep. Understood!

For sure. 1/2 price barrels and a 1/9 will do all kinds of good stuff.

And make you feel less guilty about shooting out the throat.

I just wonder why a company that puts 9.5's on a 7 mag and 7-08 would put a 10 on a 280? Seems like it'd cost more to change the barrels out just to make them less versatile.

Not just one company either. my New Model 70 FWT is 1: 10

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of! Love me some Winchester, but that made no sense though.

I’ve never checked my M725 280 Rem. Doesn’t much matter since I don’t use it for heavies.
Posted By: Redneck Re: 280 Rem twist - 03/31/21
The one I just built has a 9 twist...

My brother has a 1:8 Shaw .280AI barrel we screwed on his Savage. Does well with 140s to 168s.

My Rem 700 has a 22” Pacnor barrel with a 1-9” twist and it shoots 160’s great. I mainly use 140’s but the 160’s stabilize perfectly.

A couple of years ago I rebarreled three rifles to 6.5CM, .257 Ackley and 7x64. I went 23 inch barrels in all of them just to be a bit different. I like 22 inch and my gunsmith likes 24 inch but was happy to go the 23".
