This may have been discussed before, but what's the barrel like underneath? Can they be removed and just have exposed threads?

Yes, there'd be exposed threads, and of course the graduations used for setting the device, marked on the barrel. If you wanted to cut this off and recrown you'll end up losing about an inch and a half.

If it is a standard BOSS, and the muzzle blast is what is bothering you, I'd suggest seeing if you can find a BOSS-CR, which replaces the ported muzzle weight with an unported one. That allows you to have the tuning ability without the blast (and recoil reduction). Personally that is the way I'd go, as I have found the BOSS-CR very effective in allowing me to achieve remarkable accuracy without having to stuff around with working up loads.

Had an A Bolt with BOSS in 25-06. Shot great with the BOSS. Experimented with removing it and the results were poor. The use of a BOSS requires the recoil lug to to be seated with a hard rubber insert. I can not explain why but the Browning folks set the BOSS up that way. To cut off the BOSS you would have to do the bedding of the action and recoil lug.

I have one in an Abolt 30-06. It shoots great with or without either of the BOSS systems on it. I liked the rifle but never warmed up to the Boss.
I havent shot it in years. I thought about having a new barrel put on it but got sidetracked. It was given to me as a gift back around 2000 or so.

In addition to Dan's input, the BOSS system already reduces bbl length over non BOSS models (2.3" in my 300WM and 2" in my 280 FW) so if you cut the threads off, it's that much shorter. Not sure what make you have but the Model 70 Featherweight with the BOSS was only made one year so they have some collector value; it took me years to find one.

The CR definitely helps with the muzzle blast although the brake really works. I would liken it to a reduction in perceived recoil equal to about a 300 fps reduction in velocity if that makes sense. My 300 WM feels like my 30-06 with the same 190g bullet.

Centennial: Thanks for the info. Didn't realize the BOSS FWTs had collector value. Been thinking of re-barrelling my 280 to a 25/06. The 280 is a tack driver but the MVs are in the 7x57 range. But guess I should leave it alone. 120Btips at 2900ish will still do the trick. (That makes it equivalent to a 257 R or 6.5CM! )

Collector is relative i suppose. The Classic FW BOSS was only offered in 1996 so not common, thats for certain. I hear ya about the reduction in performance of the 280 FW BOSS. They were/are hard to find in any caliber so im just happy to have one and don't mind living with its "limitations".

The BOSS Classic Stainless Composite in 7mm Rem Mag was offered 95-98; the whole BOSS run.
