I have a savage 111 in 30-06 with a 22” barrel that I’m thinking about sending off to my smith to have the barrel shortened & threaded to 18”. My question is what kind of velocity loss will I get with loosing 4” of barrel? I have a chrono but I have never done velocity checks from a 22” to 18” barrel. What are your all thoughts & experiences? Looking for answers from those who actually have short barreled 06s. Thanks
My shots up in the northeast are short so 400yard shots are non existent unless I hunt power lines
About 100 fps.

You're going to lose about 100 fps but the larger concern will be twilight shots. If you use it for hunting, the shorter barrel will leave more unburnt power and the muzzle flash will be greater.

If you reload there are some powders with lower flash points. You'll want to develop a new load anyway.
