Would 7stw or 338rum be a candidate to become 7mm Dakota brass? (I have a bunch of those two) Other candidates?
Thanks.
Neither will work.

300 or 338 Dakota but you will need to set shoulder back OR

404 Jeff OR

There is an outfit that will make some for around $7 each with minimum order of 50 ($350 total). Search custom rifle brass. RCC Brass or something similar.
Both Dakota and Ultra Mag are variants of the 404 Jeffery, however all three have different rim diameters, the Dakota at 0.545”, the Ultra at 0.534” and the Jeffery at 0.537”. The Dakota brass is designed with an exceedingly proprietary thought in mind, same with reamer use. Dakota rifles are very much like what Weatherby was, perhaps even more proprietary whereby nobody chambers Dakota chambers in rifles except Dakota.

Ross I believe the 404 rim diameter is .545”.
Yeah I have references from different manuals at .537” and others at .543”. Thanks.

This is the correct answer. The rim on Dakota and 404J brass is nominally the same.

RCC has a very long lead time in my experience. Check the diagram they send you very carefully - that is what they set the mill to, and if it's wrong the brass is useless.
Is it the head diameter? I've read some guys use .532 brass so they don't have to open their bolt face. Can anyone tell me what brass can be used? I've read RUM brass but it needs to be shortened, but they didn't say which RUM.
Thanks.

A bolt set up for the factory Dakota will have a bolt face for .545” rim plus usual clearance so the RUM cases at .532” won’t work.

Remember that the RUM’s are a rebated rim design.
I'd rechamber for a RUM if it were me.

Ouch. This seems like a reason not to have a Dakota chambering?
That's why I'm seeing if I can form from something I have on hand.

338 lapua brass?
Quality Cartridge will help you.
Not going to be an easy forming process, even if you had the right case head size.
Multiple steps, annealing, and probably a large percentage of loss.

No, the rim diameter is .588" with the Dakota being .545".
I think you'll have to bite the bullet and either get the brass from links posted or rechamber.
