Read about more than one manufacture of bolt guns that the wsm cartridges didn't cycle smoothly . Anybody have one of these or similar [7wsm] ?

What is COL cartridge overall length ?

Can the short action 300WSM take 200+ grain bullets at max powder charges without having compressed loads ? Don't mind a bit of compressed but refuse to use huge amount of compression .

The mag box in my Classic Stainless 300wsm measures 3.045”. It feeds and ejects everything like they’re buttered up. I imagine the FN/Portugal guns are the same.

Based on the advice of various people here, I picked up a few M70 WSMs after having feeding issues with Remingtons.

The Win mag box allows you to run them long and throat them long. I'm building a 300wsm to run 200gr partitions at 2.96 and in my 7wsm I run loads at 2.96 as well but that is limited by throat length more than mag box. I did notice that at 2.98 COAL with the partitions, feeding got a little less slick. This might not be the case with a Berger or ELD-anything.

In two other custom rifles I had, 200gr partitions hit the lands at 2.93 and 2.94 when the chambers were freshly cut (ELDs were longer but I'd have to check my notes). At 2.90 COAL I seem to recall that I had no trouble fitting 67.5gr of 4831SC under a 200 partition, Norma brass.

I've had more than a few model 70's chambered in 7mm and 300wsm and none of them had feeding issues. The ones I had were classics, FN Herstal (built from classsic model 70 actions) and BACO's. The only ones I've heard of, that had issues were the remingtons and some Ruger m77's that were custom chambered for the WSM.

Of all the WSMs I have owned, only the Rem 700 has feeding issues. I regret selling my Win Model 70 FWT 7mmWSM.

I currently have Winchester M70 New Haven Classics in 270, 7mm, 300, and 325 WSMs. No feeding issues in any of them

Every M70 I’ve ever had has fed and cycled smooth as glass. And my M70 fwt .280 is getting better every day with use.

My model 70 in 7wsm feeds slick, never an issue.

It's not a Winchester, but my brother in law bought me a Ruger model 77, bolt action, in 300 WSM, a few yrs. back
and it works fine in that WSM caliber!

My M70 300WSM cycles perfectly. The load was 208gr AMAX under H4831SC, don't remember compressing the load, I was more careful then.

My New Haven M70 .270 WSM feeds fine. It'll feed empty cases from the magazine smooth as can be. As noted above, mag box is a little over 3.0" I use 3.02" as my max COAL.

Feeding problems in WSMs were made up bullshit. It possible to make a rifle in ANY cartridge not feed if the ramp or rails are cut wrong. The WSMs feed fine, and notably much smoother than belted magnums, in a correctly made rifle. The M70 WSMs I have encountered have been 100% fine for any cartridge from 6mm WSM to 375 WSM. Never tried a .416...

Magazine box length is just shy of 3.1" on mine. Some margin is probably wise.

Whether a load is compressed or not depends on what powder you choose, just like for every other cartridge. The highest velocity loads will always be slower burning powders compressed (like for the vast majority of rifle cartridges). But if you do not want to compress, you can always go to a faster burning powder, sacrifice a bit of velocity, and have a load ratio below 100%.

WSM's never fed worth a damn out if a Rem 700. They pretty much always fed well out of a model 70.

My model 70 extreme sporter 300wsm feeds fine.

I have had a good number of Classics in WSM's and FN's in WSM's as well and never had any sorta feeding problem between the 270, 7mm, 300 and 325 WSM. My 270 was a bit fussy about making sure the magazine is loaded correctly, but it turned out the mag spring was a touch weak.

I had a Winchester model 70 classic, stainless in 300wsm and it fed fine. Never had a problem with the rifle. Killed elk just fine.

That may well be - there seems to be no end to what Remington can screw up.

The classics and FN made Winchesters are good choices.

The 700 action is just to short for the wsm case.
