Rebarreling a action to 6mm rem. - 85 to 100 grain bullets - is 1:9 the right twist rate 22 to 24 in barrel.
Posted By: OSU_Sig Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/13/21
I have a 6mm Creedmoor and a 6mm Remington, both have 7 ½" twist barrels. I shoot 85's through 105's.
Posted By: Riflehunter Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/13/21
I have a 9 twist but would definitely get an 8 twist now. The 9 twist won't stabilize 100 grain Sierra TGK nor 90 grain GMX, they need an 8 twist. If going higher than 100 grain you might want faster.

No downside to faster twist and it opens many options. I’d go 8” twist, or maybe even 7.5”.

Same here. I'd go at least 8" twist, my 6mm Creedmoor has a 7" twist.

You're really handicapping yourself with a 9" twist with all the good 6mm bullets available today. A 9" twist won't shoot the best of them, an 8" will.
Posted By: Jordan Smith Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/13/21
I'd go 7", and certainly no slower than 8".
Posted By: SKane Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/14/21
As Hondo and others have stated, if 85gr is the bottom end of bullets you're entertaining, I'd go minimum 1:8 - the 1:7.5 and 1:7 opens up more options beyond 105 (should you choose to tinker).

My .243 and 2 6mm Creedmoors are all twisted 1:8. (bullets - 95 LRX,105 Berger & 103 ELD-X)
Posted By: tzone Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/14/21
I wouldn’t get anything less than 8 twist.
Posted By: dogcatcher223 Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/14/21
I built one recently with a 7.5 twist. My 6 SLR has a 7 twist. Bullets keep getting longer...
Posted By: beretzs Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/14/21
My little 6 CM is a 1-7.5 and I couldn't be happier. Everything has shot really well, and for a meat and taters sorta load I use the plain old 105 Hornady HPBT. It shot well with Nosler 55 BT's scorching out of it as well. Twist it up, you'll never wish for less twist. The opposite happens all the time with a lazy twist.
Posted By: elkhunternm Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/14/21
The 1-9" twist will do just fine for your needs Captjohn.
Posted By: SKane Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/14/21
elkhunternm, you should work for Remington. grin

Quoted for truth.

No downside to 7” twist, unless you want to push thin-jacketed lightweights to 4000fps, in which case some of them might dissolve in flight.

OTOH, a 7” will let you shoot anything out there that I’m aware of, and you never know when the bug for something different might bite.

If you were buying an older gun with a 1-9, I’d say go for it. Since you’re paying for a new barrel, why limit yourself?
Posted By: boatanchor Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/15/21
On this topic there is more to consider than just twist, my first 6mm Remington was AI'd. my gunsmith at the time talked me into a PacNor 1-8" twist 3 groove barrel.

I never even once had a Hornady 105gr A-Max make it to target, they would blow-up coming out of the barrel, the 105gr Berger VLD worked well for a few hundred rounds and they started doing the same thing. the rest of the barrel's life was with the 107gr SMK.

I have a friend with the same chambering, different reamer, different gunsmith using a 1-8"Krieger 4groove barrel that is starting to blow up bullets also.
Makes me cringe a little on threads like this when people suggest to twist it as fast as you can and there is no down side. IMO with the case capacity of a 6mm Remington I would go with a 1-8" twist but make sure you get a 5 or 6 groove barrel.

No down side to more twist

Don’t limit yourself. Get the 1-7”.

Jack wagon pretender, how many fast twist 6mm barrel's do you own ??????????
Posted By: Steve Redgwell Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/16/21
This isn't a 6mm. It is a 6x45mm with a 1 in 10 twist barrel. These are 90 gr. Speers moving at 2700 fps. They stabilize just fine. I think in your 6mm, a 1 in 9 twist will work fine.

I’ve got a 7.5 and 8 twist. Why is JWP a pretender for what he said? At least for me, a Hunter using hunting bullets, what’s the downside from faster twist from 22 to 375?
Posted By: kenjs1 Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/17/21
I have a 6mm Rem. with a factory . No problem whatsoever shooting 85 to 100 grain Sierras. Heck it shoots 105's pretty decent too.
Posted By: Bugger Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/17/21
I’d go 9 or 9 1/4.

I have a 6mm Rem on a Long action M 700.... 24 inch PacNor Stainless barrel, heavy magnum contour... one in 7 twist....

heaviest bullet it sees is the 115 gr Bergers.... 46 grs of RL 19, 3250 fps...

the lightest bullet used... H414, 75 gr Hornady HP, 3675 Fps....

its the most accurate rifle I own.

I agree.
Put two rifles in 6mm of some flavor in the classifieds and see which one sells first - the faster or slower twist. 😉

It appears we have some folks that’d do well to embrace a new century.

WOW, perhaps you did not read my first post and the concerns I raised for going too fast a twist, if you notice jack wagon was on to it instantly because he is a sexual intellect (aka:fhuqking know it all) that probably has never had a fast twist 6mm barrel......hence the question I posed. I know for sure he shot a 2 point with a 338 Lapua and 300gr SMK, but wanted knowledge of his 6mm 1-7" twist experience ???????????
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/18/21
Was looking at some load data today for the Barnes 95gr LRX. That one needs 1-8”.

Reason enough for me to go fast twist. Not the only bullet I shoot, but I want to be able to shoot it if possible.

You just like being a di k head apparently. Your opinion or experience has zip to do with anyone else's. I shoot a lot of fast twist barrels dick head

I have a 6mm Creedmoor in a 7" twist barrel and a 6mm Remington in a 7 ½" twist barrel. Why, you ask? Because I could get them twisted that fast.
Posted By: AKwolverine Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/18/21
My 6 creeds are 7 twist.

Because that’s how Barrett twisted them.
Posted By: Jordan Smith Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/18/21
I’ve sent a bunch of the 105 AM downrange at 3000+ fps using 7” 4G, 8” 4G, and 9.125” 6G barrels, and have never had one blow up. That applies to the 108 ELD and 115 DTAC from the 7” and 8” twist barrels, as well.
Posted By: Model7fan Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/19/21
I have a 1986 700 varmint special factory 9 twist. My load is 105 amax reloader 26 48.3 at 3220. 2.870 coal. It shoots and stabilizes great at that speed. If you’re going to shoot 80 grain I would stay with 9 twist

This might be of some use when considering twist rates.

It is easy to want to try this bullet and that and oh yeah that.....The one thing this helped me do is pare down that list to those most likely to fit in with what has worked in my rifle.

Enjoy

I always wonder when people have trouble with bullets "blowing up" if it isn't a rough throat that is scoring jackets that weakens them versus plain old RPM's..

That's what some cannot wrap their heads around. Has to do w length more than weight.

I have a 12 twist 6X47 Rem, 10 twist .243 Win, 7.5 twist Creed, 7 twist Creed, and a 7 twist 6X45. The last three get shot far more than the first two. Had a 7 twist .243 as well, but I had no use for a 15lb all up rifle but it did shoot!
Posted By: Ndbowhunter Re: 6mm barrel twist - 10/20/21
7 twist does fine with 58gr

and 108's
