I was thinking of a .35 cal for medium and occasional big game also to allow use of 357mag projectiles for plinking of which I have many. Wondered how popular the calibre is these days and what the main offerings are? I know of the 35 remington and 35 whelen from readings mostly. I like economical cartridges. would consider bolt, slide action, lever action but would like accuracy to 150 yards at least so a scope if preferred.

I have 35 rem,358 win,350 rem mag,35 whelen and 35 whelen AI. My go to 35 cal is the 358 win.

I would go with the 358 Win for what you're describing but I'm a Whelen fan.

35 Whelen

I've had the 35 Rem, 358 Win and 350 RM. I've never had a 35 Whelen, and now that my 35 obsession has passed, I doubt I ever will.

The 358 Win was my favorite. Mine was a circa 1980’s limited edition, 19" bbl'd RugerM77 RS.

I think I'd get a marlin in 35 Remington. Scope it and you'll be set to 150 yards easy. Perfect for deer and black bear.
Will also handle elk fine if you're hunting close cover and don't take poor shots.

But that's just how I'm feeling this morning. If you asked tomorrow I might say 35 whelen because you'll never be lacking.

358 or Whelen, just because it would be a lot easier to find a bolt gun. The prices of 336s are outrageous right now.

I know nothing about the 358 Win but am very intrigued with the possibility of using .358 pistol bullets for plinking ammo. Will someone give me a quick lesson and bring me up to speed on the 358 Win?
thanks,

It's the 308 case necked up to 0.358" with no other changes. Accurate and deadly. Pushes a 200-grain bullet around 2,500 fps or a bit better depending on barrel length.

Not much more to say...

35 Whelen without a doubt. The Whelen does everything the the 358 Win does and more.

I really like .358 (.308 necked up) and have killed many deer with mine. That’s my recommendation unless you want to hunt elk, then a Whelen might make more sense.

A fair bit better than that. Mule Deer did some good work with the .358 and .338 Fed for a comparison piece a few years back. See the attached. I loaded that back a little, only getting 2700 FPS with the 200 TTSX in my Savage 99.

A solid 400 yard rifle with the load I mentioned above, at least at the 7300' elevation where I hunted elk with it. Still doing over 2000 FPS at 400 yards. See the attached dope sheet.

But I like my 35 Whelen AI a lot too.

My choice would be the Whelen, but the .358 would make a nice and handy rifle as well.

Me, I'd probably get a Whelen.

No particular reason other then I see 3 boxes of .35 Whelen ammo on a shelf in my gun room and I haven't owned a Whelen in, oh, I dunno, 5 maybe 6 years. smile

I love my 35 rem, but its also a pump.
Buddy had a 700 classic in .35 Whelen. It was a hoot.

If I wanted a long action Id get a Whelen. If I wanted a short action, .358 win.

Think rifle type an important factor in cartridge selection.
Some dont.

If 7600s werent silly priced a JES rebore in either would be cool.

i have the whelen, 35 rem, 350 mag and 358. the 35 rem is in a class by itself. if i was to pick one of the others i'd probably go with the whelen. depends on the gun as well.
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: which 35 cal to get. - 12/27/21
I've got at least 5 358's and I love them all. I've thought if I ever run across the right 358 Norma that'd be an easy decision.
Posted By: brinky72 Re: which 35 cal to get. - 12/27/21
35 Whelen or 358 Winchester. The Whelen is a bumped up 06 and the Winchester is a bumped up 308 the Whelen holds an edge with heavier bullets much like an06. Both are quite capable out to 300+ yards and will handle anything on this continent. Both will be a build or a lucky find in the classifieds. You can also have JES rebore a 308 or 06

Unless you consult gunswizard here, then we learn the .358 Win. tops out at 100 yards. crazy
If I was serious about shooting pistol bullets I'd lean .358 Win just to reduce case size a little.

My brain thinks the shorter case with fast powder would be a better match.

What is driving the crazy prices in the 760/7600? Used to be that you couldnt give one away out west here. Now I see the prices going through the roof. I found a kind of rough, 760 with the tootsie roll pattern forearm in 270 for $350 in the local gun shop. I was thinking it would make a good Whelen rebore.... Wish it was a short action because I would like to get the .358 rebore.
Posted By: 158XTP Re: which 35 cal to get. - 12/28/21

This guy raises some question marks.Seems to have a hunting opinion on a lot of bullets. Just in 357 calibre he refers to the effects of 40 different loads on game..44 cal about the same. 30-30, 8x57, 307 winchester, 30-06, 8mm-06, the list goes on. A lot of shooting for one person if he is speaking from personal experience....

Also he talks handgun hunting but appears to be in New Zealand where they cant use them for hunting...

All the .35s mentioned are excellent field cartridges. The 358 Win is a better build if you want a handy SA killer that pretty much duplicates 30-06 energy and lethality with 225 gr loads inside 300 yards except the .35s typically offer more dramatic wounding. Both 35 Whelen and 350 Rem Mag offer more velocity and are better on very large game at extended ranges. Finding an older WSM or Rem SAUM action and barreling to a 350 Rem Mag would be a nice compact powerhouse. The 358 Norma is in a whole different class and will handle any size game anywhere with 250 gr, 300 gr and 310 gr loads.

Sounds like you may be better served with a 350 Legend or 357 lever carbine if wanting to use revolver bullets. Both are real capable on woods range deer out at 125 yards, the Legend loaded with spitzer bullets will reach much further.
Posted By: weagle Re: which 35 cal to get. - 12/28/21
I've owned a bunch of different .35's including a 9x57. IMHO the .358 is the pick of the litter. Find a good short action bolt gun and send it to Jess for a rebore and cut the barrel to 20" and you have great, versatile rifle in a handy package.

This is my Sako L57 that Jess rebored. It shoots great with a wide range of bullets from 150gr Rem psp to 220gr speer flat points. Never tried any pistol bullets.

If you really want to step up there's always the 358 Norma or 358 STA. But in reality, the Whelen is all you'll ever need.
Posted By: Tom2506 Re: which 35 cal to get. - 01/12/22
I’m partial to the Whelen myself, having 2, however the 358 Win makes more sense. I also own a 35 Rem which also has a lot going for it. Since you’re a hand loader I would say pick a action type you like and get either a 35 Rem or 358 Win chambered in it. Those XTP’s get kinda fragile above 2000fps. Speer 180 or 220 HotCors are good hunting bullets in either. 200 gr Remington RN CoreLokts are great if you can find them too. Sounds like a fun project. Good luck and have fun! Tom

I have been shooting both the Whelen and Win for years and currently own both. I really like my pre-64 M70 358 Win though.

Good question! 30 some years ago I owned one, hunting one Pennsylvania deer season with it and couldn’t wait to get rid of it. It didn’t shoot all that well but the real problem was that you couldn’t carry the damn thing on a cold day without your hands turning to ice, even through gloves. I’d never own one again.

Speaking of 35’s, I thought the only 35 caliber rifle was a 350 legend? :-) Watched a video recently of a guy getting one custom built, paid over $2500 for and I’m asking myself, Why??? Whatever I guess, to each there own.

I would go with the .35 Whelen. I have had one for over 21 years now. Great cartridge.
Posted By: PJGunner Re: which 35 cal to get. - 01/17/22
I have four rifles in .358 Win. and three in the .35 Whelen. My choice considering where I hunt, I go with the Whelen. I do like shooting cast bullets in the .358 though.
I remember an elk hunt up in Washington state quite a few years back. Hunted next to the Olympic National Forest and that was some thick country hunting. Sitting on a stand I was thinking that something like a .358 Win. with 250 gr. bullets loaded to the hilt would have been some kind of perfect. After the hunt I was at work and saw a Ruger 77 in .358 Win. for sale. I called the shop the next day as it was brand new in the box. I gave him my name and I'd be there within the hour. About six months later a guy I sometimes bout and traded guns with had another. Said he didn't like the kick so I got into that one fairly cheap. Then later on I fell into a BLR and a Savage 99, both in .358. Never shot any of them on game. Same with the first two Whelens I bought. Third was the charm and it's taken six elk for me so far, all one shot kills or hit so hard they couldn't get up to run off. Impressed me no end. Never have shot pistol bullets in any of them but do run cast 200 gr. bullets for fun on paper.

I would do 35 whelen unless I ever wanted to push 280+ grain bullets.
Posted By: pabucktail Re: which 35 cal to get. - 01/17/22
It pretty much comes down to what rifle or action strikes your fancy, and go from there. Find one you like and have JES re-educate it to the correct bore and chamber: .35 rem, .358, or the Whelen.
Posted By: surefire7 Re: which 35 cal to get. - 01/18/22
35 Whelen.

Couple of years ago I took a Shiras Moose in CO with my Whelen and 280 gr. SAF.

With a 1/12 twist, you can shoot the 280 & 310 gr. bullets, and enough powder to scoot them along.

I own a Dakota Classic Deluxe and a Ruger Hawkeye, both in 35 Whelen and both are 1/12 twist.

I hunt Elk with the same rifles using either 225 gr. TBBC, or 250 gr. NP.

I have taken the Dakota Whelen to Africa and taken a bunch of PG with it also.

It’s all good!
Posted By: Hogwild7 Re: which 35 cal to get. - 01/18/22
A whelen can shoot further than a couple of hundred yards. I was doing some deer drives with some people and one of them crippled a doe. She ended up stopping out in a field. I estimated her at 300 yards. laid down rested on a rice levee aimed a Foot over her shoulders and squeezed. She tipped over dead. 325 or so steps bullet went straight through the middle of both shoulders.

I'd toss out a vote for a .350 mag. It can be loaded down and can do more than most .35 options. I've found it to be accurate and have used it from whitetail deer to bison.
