Does Kimber still make the Montana rifle ???
KimberHere is a thread about the same subject just a few months ago. My understanding is that pistols are selling as fast as they make them right now so rifles have been given a backseat.
I called them a few weeks back and was told "Yes we still produce the Montana". Supposedly they will be available "soon". I'll be buying a 270 win when that happens.
I bought a new .30-06 Montana from a well known national dealer back in March, said they had just gotten it in and it was the only one. Didn’t need it, but I’m very fond of the Montana’s.
I have one in 300 Win mag. Thinking about putting it on my table at a gunshow in a couple of weeks. A buddy said I should hang onto it,as he said they are not making the Montana model anymore. Thats why the question.
Actually love the rifle, most accurate centerfire I presently own, just too much recoil ! Thought about a brake, but have other rifles to hunt with.
Thanks.
Do you reload? Try loading 150 grain bullets with H4895. Even a max load is pretty tame, but you can tune it down to your liking if you really like the rifle and want to keep it.
You can’t beat a Montana in calibers up through 308. I personally don’t want one in the bigger chambering because of recoil. Yeah, I’m old and a wuss.
Jeffrey, yes I reload. These are not max, but still wak you pretty good in a light Montana .
That’s a wonderful shooter but I don’t want or need the recoil of a 300 in a montana either. If you’re not opposed to a suppressor it would help a lot but not everyone likes or wants one.
Full power 7-08 loads get a little lively in the Montana!
I can’t wait until they start making them on a regular basis. I will be adding a 7-08
I have a pair of Mountain Ascents, in .280ai and an MA in ,308Win. I find them all quite pleasant to shoot with maxed loads and I hope to find a .30-06 Montana, for my Tacoma 4x4.
They ARE a bit costly here in Canada, though, but, I do like them.
When it comes to paying The Fiddler,a Montucky has no equal in felt recoil management. Hint.............

I was told roughly the same thing about six months ago. She told me that they were still being made and to keep an eye out. It seems like they have enough demand that hopefully they’ll start production again soon.

Agree 100%

Don't knock it till you try it. Every -06 I've owned hits harder than a 300wsm Montana.

I've never found mine to be all that bad. Seriously better than the average 30-06 to me. Not that the 06 is bad, just that it's the "average" most people know. That Montana stock is pretty damned good. Mine's just a 7-08 with a 6x shooting 162's at pressure.
Oh it's not bad, but I have to pay more attention to it than in an 8lb rifle. Just thinking what a .300 may be like.
That said, give me a Montana 7-08 any day.
JMHO, but a Kimber Montana in .300WSM is just about the perfect "do everything" rifle for the western hunter - easy to carry, hits with authority, manageable recoil due to the excellent Montana stock. A Montana in 7mm-08 would be a lighter recoil version of the same.
While I don't doubt that Kimber says "we're still making them," it is pretty much impossible to find one new anywhere in North America. Their non-existence makes it clear Kimber is not making them, and has not been making them for awhile. Hopefully, Kimber will put them back into production soon, but American gun companies sometimes do dumbazz things, like drop a perfectly good product from their catalog. Untill I see them back on the shelves, I am holding my Montanas dear, even the ones I hardly ever shoot.

Like to add a 7-08 myself after missing out on a Barrett. Just bought a Montana 308 from VAHillBilly for my son and have to say, I like it a lot, kid likes it a lot and just shot factory ammo for the upcoming deer season and pretty impressed with accuracy, handloads, I think it will really shine. Recoil was very manageable in a gun going just under 6 pounds all up
I can shoot 7-08 ,and 308 Montana's all day. My 300 win mag is a whole different story ! Recoil wise.
In performance versus recoil, the Montana 7WSM is a lot of bang for the buck. Pun intended.

This is absolutely true. With modern bullets, 7mm is now a better choice than the venerable .30 cal for most western big game hunting. Unfortunately, the 7mm WSM just didn't catch-on as well the 300WSM has.
True, but brass is a simple false shoulder away.

That's what I wanted but when I could buy - Whittakers only had the 7-08. I don't feel slighted in choice but I believe you're right.
I’ll take the recoil of my 300 wsm 8400 over that of my ‘06 84L any day. That pound delta makes more of a difference than it should. The 270/280 seems to be about my personal limit for comfort in the 84L platform, and 300 wsm in the 8400. I’m sure swamplord will be along shortly to tell me of my masculine shortcomings, but that’s where I fall.

My exact expereince as well, right down to my lack of masculinity
I've had two 84L 270 MT's, one 84L 30-06 MT, and three 8400 300 WSM MT's. The 8400 MT stock is a recoil soaking mother. Still, the barrel is too light for my taste, and would prefer it mic no less than .625" at the muzzle.
I have 2, a 270 and a 223. had a 300wsm that was an incredible shooter. I wish that I'd never sold it. Never hunted it but enjoyed shooting it.
Hope not!!!!! 3 of the them were garbage

I'm down to two as well, a 308 and 243 Win. For me the 84L is "just ok" - I definitely prefer the 84M.
My wife has the 7mm-08. I have a couple of the WSMs and a 338 Winchester. I prefer the dimensions and feel of the WSM rifles.
Sounds more like, “We’re still planning on making them”.
Worth the wait I expect.
Kimber is the only company I know of that built an action specifically for the WSM cartridges. I have owned a Montana and a Sub-Alpine chambered in 300 WSM and they were my favorite Kimbers I ever owned ( not the most accurate Kimber rifles I owned though as I have owned several that were extremely accurate) I will buy another one if they ever build them again 👍.....Hb

I’m not including ammo but the gun bear was 5lbs 2 ounces, Talley’s and a 3x9 Leupold, just 6 pounds
I've kilt a lotta stuff with my 260 Montana. Can't see ever getting rid of it....

My 7-08 with 2.5x8 and talleys weighs right at 6.0, without ammo or sling.

"All up" generally means scoped, with sling and rounds.
But Chip's spot-on - a 308 MT with Talley's and 3-9 Leupold will be just at or under 6lbs at the bench, or around 6.5 lbs with sling and rounds (all-up).
^^^ very close to what what I have with my 308 84 M with 1.8 LH vortex in Talleys ….6#and an ounce or two
My Adirondack with Talleys, a heavy Zeiss 1.8-5.5, and 9” suppressor is a pound heavier, exactly. 7# 1oz
My 338 Federal with 2.5x Leupold ultralight weighs 5.3 pounds IIRC.
Crazyhow light they ‘can’ be. If I kicked the can off my Adirondack and threw on one of my Leupold 1-4s, I’d be around there….but yours is LIGHT.
Even if they start back making them didn't they lose the stock maker for the Montana's?
That was the rumor….I’m sure they can have the design built elsewhere, though. Cost?
