Anyone happen to own an Ascent in 270 win and know the bare rifle weight? If not a 270 any LA will suffice.

Website says 5lbs 10oz - supposedly the same as the 84L Montana which I doubt. Various internet reviews repeat what the website states. I've seen at least 1 review state 5lbs 2oz. Due to the spirals, I'm inclined to belive 5 lbs 2oz.

Thanks.

Man, I wished I had a picture for you. My little brother has the SubAlpine 280 Imp which I think was the precursor to the Ascent. Either way, it is light, even with the 3x9 SS on it, it is still a feather'ery feel rifle.

I lied, found a picture.

Thanks Scott. That's what I thought. I'd muchly prefer a Montana but am seriously considering the MA. I ain't really a spiral flute bolt/barrel kind of guy. Plus I'm not enamored with the Hunter version either.....

Same here. I have been looking for a 270/280 Montana after I got this 7-08.. Man, I feel stupid when they were all over the place for 1000-1200 bucks awhile ago and I didn't grab one.
Slooowwwwww the fhuqk down and think mechanics. Hint.

LA Kimber's suck heavy ass,due the fhuqking mag constraints. So NO matter the OEM chambering, they are Dog Schit. Hint.

Fhuqking LAUGHING!...............

Mines for a 7x57 Improved of some sort. It ain't at the top of my list, but I sorta think that'd fit and function pretty easily and be fun to mess with.
My 270 MA weighs 6- 1.5 with Leupold 6x36 and Talley mounts.

I’ve a vanilla 7x57 on an 84L. Been a great gun with 162s.
The .270 MA I owned was ~5lbs 1oz. With 1" Swarovski fixed 4x, plus titanium bolt knob, aluminum trigger guard, and thread protector no muzzle brake, ~ 5lbs 15oz empty no sling.
4lbs 15oz empty no sling?
I read that as with scope empty no sling.

You could say the same about the 84M in a number of chamberings. The beauty of the Kimber rifles aside from the CRF action, wonderful triggers and perfect stocks are that they are built to be svelte. If you want to shoot “long range” grab a 700 or the like with a chunky stock and a fat barrel, or a CA or whatever.

But if you want a svelte, well done rifle that will spend more time in your hands and still shoot great to hunting ranges than a Kimber MT of any 84m/l ilk would be great. I have a 280ai MT in addition to MTs in 223 and 338F. First thing I did with my 280 after some initial testing was cut the threads off and shorten the barrel a couple of inches. It carry’s better now and still shoots heavier bullets faster than my 7mm/08 Classic will shoot, without even trying.

That said, if you’re not trying to shoot past 3-400, I think the 84m is your huckleberry. If you want to stretch it another 100 yards to 4-500 yards, the 84L is a great fit, IMO.

If you want to shoot at live critters further than that, get something with a longer mag box and a heavier barrel to accommodate heavy bullets and give you and more solid platform. If that’s your game a heavier rifle should be fine. If you don’t mind putting the wear on your boots and building some lactic acid in your legs, get the Montana.

You might also wait for the Montana. I found my 280, NIB this summer on line. You never know when something will show up, but you do know what you want, and that’s a MT. I’m with you on the Hunter’s. I don’t like the DM feature.

I was thinking it might be pretty fun. I have a 6.5x55 Improved reamer I had made up a long while back as well that would be cool on the gun.
I agree with your post. I've owned a couple Montana LAs and unless you shoot high BC bullets, the mag box will work OK. I could seat bullets to 3.35 in my 280 AI - never had an issue getting bullets to seat close to L&G and shoot accurately. Monos offer a bit more forgiveness given their propensity for a bit of a jump.

My plan for a 270 is the 129 LRX. You can launch them at 3100 and it shoots flat to 500. I don't shoot beyond 450, and prefer to keep ranges on the short side of 400 - unless something is wounded. I also tend to shoot bullets that hang together when things show up close. I've shot more elk at 400 inches than I have at 400 yards.

5lbs 15oz, with scope and rings, no ammo, no sling...
Thank you.
I did the SAS preflight check list before I shot it. Sanded 0.030"-0.040" off bottom of mag box to get just a smidge of movement when everything was bolted up. IIRC, was right around MOA with Nosler Trophy Grade 130gr NAB's. Was surprisingly comfortable to shoot off the bench for a light rifle.

I run the twin to yours. Same scope, rings and weight.

Actually 6lbs 1.7 oz on my scale with the scope covers.

I picked up a NIB 30-06 Subalpine last summer from a shop in north Idaho. It was priced well and, frankly, was the only one I have seen so it came home. With a 1.5-8x32 Vortex Razor HD in Talley LW's it goes 6# 2 1/2 oz.
