Not sure if this is the best location, but I will give it a shot. Looking for a nice quality leather sling for hunting rifles. Needs to be American made. I generally like the wider than military style slings(cobra style?).

Wondering if anyone has any recommendations or maybe a fire member builds them. I have a Hunter brand which is nice, but I could use another and wondering what’s out there.

Thanks.

Montana Slings makes a nice, quality one.

I've found I like the cheap, neoprene ones better. eek I have a few quality leather ones I keep on the older rifles though.

Third on Montana. Easily the best-made leather sling I've ever handled, let alone owned. The cartridge carriers are top notch, too.

Order on the phone and tell Pat he’s been gone too long!

Leather slings are heavy, esp the cobras. Maybe a big deal, maybe not.

Thanks everyone for the insight. Looks pretty unanimous in regards to Montana. I like the looks of their easy adjust and am leaning towards giving them a try.

I too have 1/2 a dozen Montana slings.

With all the recommendations I’ve seen of the Montana slings, I may have to try on. But, I generally like a cobra style that is wider at the shoulder than the straight slings. I don’t think Montana makes a cobra style. I really like this one from Galco: https://www.galcogunleather.com/tapered-rifle-sling_8_120_1308.html

Simple design. High quality leather.

True, most are, especially those that are wide. But my 1" Montana Sling is not much heavier than my nylon "Mountain Sling.

I initially bought a 1 1/4" Montana sling. Liked it well enough to buy a 2nd one later and went with the 1" sling the 2nd time. That is the only thing I use anymore.

The sling can be mounted in either direction. If mounted with the loop forward the loop can be utilized as a shooting sling. But I prefer to mount it with the loop at the rear. This places the rough-out leather against my shoulder and prevents it from slipping when carried. With the loop mounted forward you have the slick leather against your shoulder.

Personal preference and it depends on what is more important to you.

I've got these on 3 pre 64 Model 70s: https://www.brownells.com/aspx/search/productdetail.aspx?pid=1180

On the Montana slings is there any preference of 1 vs 1.25 widths? I would guess it’s just a personal preference, but JMR40 got me thinking a little…

Murray's Custom Leather for me.

I'm probably lunatic fringe about scent, but leather holds smells like a sponge and I won't even wear a leather belt out deer hunting. When I use a belt or a sling it is nylon out hunting. I did miss getting a shot at a mega buck once when my rifle was slung over my shoulder instead of in my hands where I could use it.

Murray Custom Leather is my favorite.

I have a suede leather cobra sling with stiched-in padding that is light. I think it's a butler creek, but not sure. I like it. Pictured below on BLR.

I haven't weighed it but it feels like nothing yet plenty strong. In fact, I took it off the BLR and used it as a harness across my chest with some rope to drag this buck. It wasn't a short drag either. Held up fine.
