I have a 1963 Rem 760 in .35 rem.
It shoots great.

However, i was wanting a Grice synth 7600 carbine and never got one.

Did find a 760 last run, so looks like a 7600....in .35 rem.

Decent shape w crap.scope, for 800. Ouch.
Wondering if i should get it, have bbl cut to 18.5, cerakote and slap an Aimpoint H2 on it. Of course, synth stock w high comb.

Dont need it but......

I have a 760 35 Remington produced during the last run in 1980. Someone before me lopped the barrel to 18". It's a handy woods gun. I kinda wish it hadn't been altered but it's certainly useful in it's present form. I call it my Wisconsin woods gun whenever I hunt on the other side of the river

Do it. Sounds like a wicked woods killer.

I've got a 7600 30 06 with the 18.5 inch barrel. Absolutely love this gun. Recoil is stout in a carbine 30 06. A 35 Rem never would have hurt me at the ranges I shoot and the reduced recoil would have helped with follow up shots. 35 Rem might be the perfect caliber for that rifle if you keep it light with the H2 or a peep. I say, do it. If it were mine though, I'd rethink the high comb. Cool project, good luck!

Just saw and shot a 'new" style 760 in 308 that was cut to just over 16". Handy handling rifle, LOUD to shoot. Would make an awesome rig to carry all day.

A 760 in decenbt shape for $800 these days is a bargain!

I've been on GB watching them for about a year, looking for a doaner to turn into a carbine for doing drives. Figured I'd cut the barrel to 20" and have it board out to .358Win or .35Whelen depending on the base cartridge, Cerakote it and add a 1-4 or 1-6X. The prices they're going for on GB are unbelievable.

Right now I'm using a rem M7 in .350RM in a Manners stock. Weighs just at 7lbs "all up". Works great, but faster follow up shots would be nice to have.

Holy smokes, you aren't joking. Prices have gone through the roof on GB. Have you checked local pawn shops?

I think I paid $300 for my last 760, which was a fair price just a couple years ago.

I know where a synthetic 7600 in .270 is, local shop has had it for a decent while...they may be motivated to sell.

I've got a few rifles around here that were bought for no reason other than....because I wanted to.

You will not get any discouragement from me...grin

Scott, how much velocity do you think you can get with the 180 fn at 18.5"? Mb
Posted By: beretzs Re: 760 project maybe - 02/04/23
I’d bet you’d do well with LVR and the 180’s in the 760. I’m not sure as I haven’t ran that combo from a short barrel but 2450 wasn’t any big trick in a M336 35 Rem. I think if you can fit enough LVR or similar powder in the case, the 760 will take it no problem.

Correct. The 760 would be a stronger action. And magazine fed for pointy bullets.
Posted By: Magnum_Bob Re: 760 project maybe - 02/04/23
The Remington M14 & 141 have a unique spiral magazine tube so the bullet pts don't sit on the primer of the shell in front of it. I have 3 boxes of original Remington 150 gr ptd soft points, sure to be safe in my old 760 but my 141? Lvr is definetly going to figure in there...mb

In theory you can use spires in the 141, but I've read several accounts that say they don't feed well in practice. IDK personally as all I've used in my 141 is RN and FP bullets. Let us know if it works for you though.

I have a 760 in 30-06 I’d sell pretty cheap. I don’t know why it doesn’t shoot accurately. I’ve owned a 76 & a couple 7600’s that were very accurate.
Someone on the fire said it was due to the muzzle. If that was the problem cutting the barrel back or boring it to 35 would take care of it.

I traded an AR I was tired of for a very nice model Six a few years ago. I upgraded the mounts holding the Redfield Widefield 3-9 on it and fed it my standard ‘06 deer load. Shot pretty well and looked nearly new, but it was just too big and heavy IMO for a walking-around rifle. It went very quickly when advertised locally. I’d had my fun too, so win-win.

While bubba is having his way with that nice old survivor, he might as well run a 358Winchester reamer into it and completely ruin it. smile smile

Yeah, it is ridiculous what is being asked for Remington guns, period- not just the 7600 and 760. I have a synthetic 7600 in .270 that I thought about selling, but then to replace it should I ever get the pump gun itch again, would be too much. Plus, they are kind of a PA thing, I might not allowed in some camps if I didn’t at least have one.

Wouldn't that make a nice long throat 9.3x57mm Mauser. It'd be like a 358 Winchester only better.

Hmmm maybe my memory is failing but haven't other guys had JES rebore and chamber to 9.3x62?..mb

Incidentally my scoped Remington 760 in 35 Remington weighs exactly the same as my scoped 700 mountain rifle. Rifle weight is a bit of a concern with the 9.3x62mm. Thinking a handloader would be better off with a 9.3x57mm. It'd make all the Canadian moose hunters drool.
Posted By: MrMuskie Re: 760 project maybe - 02/06/23
A 35 Whelen is easy. A 9.3x62 not so.
Nothing you shoot will ever know the difference.

The 9.3x57 didn't get much traction here in Canada. A few shoot it, but many get rechambered to the x62.

I see it as a metric 358Winchester which is not a bad thing.
Posted By: Gaschekt Re: 760 project maybe - 02/06/23
The easy button is a Whelen and that probably makes the most sense. A 760 in 35 Whelen would be an excellent combination.

That'd be a thumper Bob. I know my little 35 Whelen carbine is a handful.

I have a beautiful 65 in 308 I picked up here with the intentions of making it a 358 carbine, but after getting it I can't bring myself to do it. It's in too good a condition. I would like to find a 35 Rem someday though. This rifle loony-ism I was infected with by the campfire is getting ridiculous though. grin
