I had Kevin Weaver of Weaver Rifles save my old Weatherby 98 that was a shot out 270 Weatherby. He rebarreled it with a Lilja 1-8 twist stainless 6.5 barrel 24 inches long. I've heard that 98's are not as accurate but this one has blown me away. I have settled on 54 grains of Rl 26 with a 140 grain nosler accubond. Muzzle velocity is 2980fps. My last two three shot groups at 100 yards have been .570 and then yesterday .240. Cannot say enough about Kevin and his work.

Is brass readily available?

I found an unfired Remington 673 Guide Gun in 6.5 mag in a pawn shop a few years ago. Laminate stock, 22 inch barrel, and a very nice handling rifle. This pawn shop was selling off a huge collection of guns, and every time I'd go in with the intention of buying the 673, I'd find something else I liked better. Anyway, went in one day with the intention of buying it and it was gone. I didn't really need it, but I'm still kicking myself for not buying it.

No skin in the game ..... love me my ol' school 6.5x55 ..... but why didn't the 6.5 Rem Mag ever take off? Was it the belted case? Was it a lack of rifles chambered for it? Was it simply ahead of its time ...... the 6.5 craze hadn't hit yet?

The ballistics seem like something a shooter/hunter would have wanted.

I was able to obtain 300 new cases through GunBroker, I believe that will last me more than long enough. So far it has been such an easy case to load for and brass life seems great.

It was introduced in the Remington 600, probably not the best vehicle for that cartridge given the COAL issues that a short action imposed on it and the short, 18.5", barrel. Remington also chambered it in the 660 and, for a short time, the 700 BDL. The only other rifles that I recall being cataloged in 6.5 RM were the Mossberg 800 and Ruger 77R.

I have a flat bolt Ruger 77 in 6.5 RM that I bought because the price was too low to pass on, $325 otd, from Bill Guilderdale's country gun shop in Stockbridge, VT. Because of the COAL issues in short actions, Remington/Peters only loaded 100 and 120 grain bullets in their 6.5 RM factory loads, even though a majority of people seem to want to shoot heavier/longer bullets in their 6.5mm bore rifles.

If Remington was ahead of their time in any way, it was their propensity for bringing out cartridges that were really great concepts but poor executions in terms of details. .244, 6.5, .280, .350 RM……

And then just bailing on them.
The 244 was the only one they put continued effort into...too late.

Talk about bailing on them...how could I forget the 5mm Rimfire Magnum ?

I have known a few guys that owned Remington 600s in 6.5RM and 350RM, they loved the way they handled in the woods, but the muzzle blast was a big turn off. If you can find an early 1970s Model 700 in 6.5RM with a longer barrel you have a real treasure from what I hear
