I am going to build a 338-06 on a pre-1964 action and cant find any pre-64 tupperware stocks. Anyone know who makes one?

Try a McMillan Classic.

A few years ago, I picked up an H-S Precision stock on sale at Sportsman's Warehouse for my Pre-64 Mod. 70. The guys at the store weren't sure if the H-S stock would work & said I could take it back if I didn't ding it up. My gunsmith said that he'd have to modify it but he could make it work. BTW, as I recall, the stock was for the post-64, mod. 70. Anyway, the smith had to do some inletting/material removal and he got it to fit. Although the rifle is on the heavy side (about 9 1/4 lbs) it shoots under an inch all day long & oftentimes in the 3/4" range. I'm happy with it. Just a thought for ya to consider.

The best current synthetic stock for P-64s is the Borden-Rimrock, all factors considered. I have quite a number of these rifles in various "plastic" stocks and have/had Clifton, Brown, Rimrock and Micky, including an Edge Compact, a G&H and others.

The RR is less money, seems equal in quality to current Mickys and handles recoil very well; I have a pair of P-64 Alaskans in .338WM, my minty .375 and it's paired .30-06Fwt. in these and am very happy with them since I bought my initial one circa 1992, IIRC.

I wouldn't do a .338-06 on an action as heavy as a P-64 when it can be converted to a .338WM, the best chambering for that action ever, IMHO, BUT, you do what YOU enjoy! Try the Rimrock, I think that you will not be disappointed.

They do - I put one on my 270. It worked OK - raised the comb enough to make it easier to shoot with the scope. I took it back off.

I am going with a 338-06 for a couple of reasons. This will be a brush gun with a short barrel for hunting black bears and elk with the occasional 300 yard shot. So I don't need the added recoil of a 338 mag. I already have a long range rig chambered in 338 ultra. I figure if your going to go magnum go all the way.

My first deer rifle was a 7 x 57 built on a 1949 commercial FN Mauser action built by William Sukalle. I bought it in 1986 for $250 from a friend who had paid that much for it at a pawn shop. Neither of us knew anything about the rifle. Since it wasn't a .270, which I couldn't afford at that time, I didn't like it much, but have since learned that it's a real prize. I restocked it and it now wears a Leupold VX-ll. With handloads or Hornady light magnums, I get good velocity and great accuracy.

I'd put it in an Echols' Legend. Bar none the best stock for full sized grown up rifles.

Supply can be very limited but worth the wait. They are made by mcmillan for Echols only. Most if not all the other Mcmillans for M70 are copies of ill designed factory stocks and feel like 2x4s in comparison to the Legend. I've shot them in .300s, .340, .375, .416, and .458 lott. They were designed by D'Arcy who actually knows how to build and design a rifle. They will come as a blank; still need to have the bolt notch and ejection port cut, painted, bedded.

Let me echo Ralphie's support for the Legend stock from D'Arcy. I have handled them, and they are far and away my preference for a 30 caliber and above gun using a long Model 70 action. That being said, if you put too small a barrel in it (like the featherweight contour), the appearance is off.

If you go to the Africa forum and look for the thread started by Allen Day on Guns and Gear for 2008, the two guns of his that are pictured in it are Legend stocks. So is the stock in the thread in the custom rifles forum started by Ngrumba entitled Custom LH Model 70Remington 416.
