Is there such a thing as a rust preventive for a chamber which
is NOT also a lubricant?

I am looking for something which can be used without the need
of cleaning oil from the chamber prior to shooting. Where I was
raised in western Nebraska with very low humidity, there was very
little worry about rust occurring with no rust preventive at all.
However, here in Iowa, humidity deterioration of steel is a far
different story. After 30 years of cleaning out the "lube" from
my chambers, I am sick and tired of it. There are times when it
cost me getting a predator because of the time involved.

What do you use?

Birchwood Casey anti rust cloths. That the silicone in them is something of a lubricant is not really an issue as far as I am concerned. I also hunt with a dry and unlubed Chromemoly barrel a fair amount but put tape over the muzzle just after I de-lube it and fire it once or twice only just before settng out to hunt. Been working for me.

I dont like to oil my barrels. I use Hoppes gungrease. I put a little on a patch and run it through the barrel. But of course it calls for wiping out prior to shooting. I only do this for storage purposes. During hunting season I never have had a problem even here in Texas with high humidity. With the grease I dont have to worry about the oil running back down into the action and stock which can cause problems later.

Rust Barricade.Goes on wet but leaves a dry film.
hey
fluid film can be purchased at any john deere dealer.

Use Miltec and it'll soak into the metal.

Same stuff as is in the wipes I mentioned. Great stuff. Even works on blue steel in coastal and rainy Alaska for the ten day trips I have been on several times.

Wasn't aware it came in wipes..Think I'd perfer them to the can.But do like getting into every nook and cranny with the spray.

Individual appplication wipes in single wraps is easier to get into a small daypack, bushplane etc. and does not want to migrate onto your scope when wiping down the barrel. Both are good for various purposes. The wipes also go onto a bore snake right nicely to be pulled through the bore once every few days when in rainy country. Just my opinion and experience. Good post and thread, BTW.

I also use it on my dies when I`m done reloading. Good stuff, I think it replaced "Sheath" which I used prior.
Thanks, men. Fantastic responses and advice that I can
use.

Like WD40. WD40 is for preventing corrosion.

DannoBoone,
I would oil the gun after you get done hunting. I would hunt with a dry clean chamber. Otherwise the case cannot grip the sides of the chamber which will increase bolt thrust. This could be dangerous!
If you are hunting in the wet you have no choice other than daily maintenance. Yes it is a PIA, that is why stainless steel is so popular. wink
If you are hunting in cold weather, leave your gun outside otherwise condensation will form when you bring it in, and rust loves that.
If your barrel is not dry the POI will be different as well.
