Well my project rifle is now coming to be a reality. I finally found a Sako m75 Grey Wolf for my 338-06 rifle. Been searching a long time for any Sako Greywolf in the "IV" action. Found a new 25-06 and got it for a good price-cheaper than a used 30-06 one I found earlier (they wanted too much for it in my opinion and that was 2 months ago and they are still sitting on it).

Should have it here by tommorrow nite as a buddy is picking it up to bring to me.

Looking for reccommendations in barrel length and barrel manufacturer. Thinking of 24" in a Pac-Nor.

Anyone have some pet loads to share? I'm going to use 225gr Accubonds and have lots of different powders ready to try. Also would you just resize 30-06 brass or maybe try the Norma brass headstamped 338-06 if I can find it here in Canada.

I have a Leupold VX3 scope in Gunmetal Grey been waiting for a home and now it has one.

I'll post pics when completed.

What powder do you have. I have found the 338-06 likes everything I have tried...

How about getting it rebored? I'm having one of my sako 75's done...going from 30'06 to 9.3x62, should work out cheaper in the long run.

The best brass for 338-06 is Winchester,because it's the most roomy.But weight them first,I have bunch Winchester that weights the same as my Remington,hmmm.A Sako should be better than the FN I use,the longer mag box should give you a longer COAL. To get the 2650 with a 225,I had to go with a slightly faster powder than W-760 or IMR-4350.When those compressed my velocity dropped.I use Ramshot Big Game,but IMR-4007 and N-550 fit the slot ,too.A 225gr at 2650 has about the same drop as a 30-06 180gr,that's why the velocity mattered.Your choice of a 225Accubond is beter than my 225Hornady.I stem to sterned a #1000 moose with mine.

I neck up Federal '06 brass because I don't use Federal brass for anything else. Likewise, I use nickled brass in my .280s and regular brass in my .280 AI. It makes it easy to quickly notice if you have the wrong round for the cartridge for which your rifle is chambered.

About the time that I got my .338-06, I read an article by JB in which he talked about Nosler beefing up the 200 grain BT. I loaded some and they shot really well in my rifle, and it turned out that they killed elk really well, too. They also shoot a little flatter than the 225s, a feature that I have yet to take advantage of, as every elk that I have taken with it has been well under 100 yds away.

My 338-06 was purchased used. It has a MKX action with a 24" McGowen barrel. I use 4320,4064. My best accuracy loads are:

225 Horn SP 51gr 4064 Fed cs,RLR prim

200gr Horn SP 52gr 4320 or 52gr 4064 "

210 Nosler Part 52gr 4320 RP CS., WLR prim

I got these out of "Wildcat Cartridges" and they all shoot 1" or less in my rifle. I have only used Fed & RP 06 cases run in a 338-06 FL die with a tapered expander. Be sure to lube the inside of the neck well, and they go very smooth.

I was going to just rebore as the gunsmith said the Sako stainless barrels can be done but the chromemoly ones are to hard. For the price difference of rebore to new barrel, I going with a new barrel ($150)

I have good selection of powders on hand. The new Winchester Supreme 780, Retumbo, H-1000, RL-22, H414, 380, Varget, 7828, 4350, plus a few more cant remember. I'll probably start with the 780 first, and look in the Nosler Reloading manual for 338-06.

I've had the best luck with H4350, and RL15 with 200-210gr bullets.

My .338-'06 was a rebored Tradewinds Husky '06, and it made a light rifle for the woods. The barrel was 22" (a friend has it now). I always used the 210 gr Nosler Partition.

I just checked Nosler #6, and 52.0 gr IMR 4320 gives 2,690 fps with teh 200/210 gr bullets. This is their top load, and most accurate in that powder. Load density is 89%.

I use Re 15 in my 338-06s with 200-210 grain ABs and Partitions. Excellent accuracy. I don't recall the velocity, but I think it was somewhere between 2600-2700. I never worried about the velocity, knowing it was more than sufficient to kill elk at any range within my normal 300 yard limit for field accuracy.

I've never found the Nosler manual velocities to be very realistic in all but my 270s. Their suggested accuracy powder is usually spot on.

If you use good bullets for your intended game in this caliber, I would not fret velocity too much.

The last two are the way to go IMO.

All with 180-210gr bullets.

I went with a 22 inch Pac-Nor #3 barrel, and use R-P .35 Whelen cases and RL-15.

I have a 23" Krieger on my McMillan stocked .338-06. I neck up Winchester .30-06 brass in Redding dies FL dies. I've had good accuracy with IMR-4064 and RL-15 with the 200gr NBT's, 225 NAB's, and 250gr Grand Slams. The 210 TSX's show a lot of promise at the range, so I'm probably going to run them on my next hunting trip.

H414, 380, Varget, 4350

These have all worked well for me.
